High blood pressure won't go down?

Hiya

My dad was taken to hospital yesterday after confusion and memory loss

His blood pressure was 214/140

After lots of tablets and an IV (overnight stay) it's only gone to 202/114

Why isn't it going down with hospital care? im very concerned x

you really don't want it to come down too quickly though. They're probably treating it with that in mind.

True but he's been in the actual hospital since 11;30 yesterday morning and it's barely dropped

My blood pressure has always been as high as your dads even though I was medicated by gp. Not to worry you but just had a stroke hospital changed all my meds and finally it has come down. Does he need a new medication regimen? I suffered memory loss from stoke and suffered deleriums/ hallucinations. I’m on the mend learning to walk and I’m amazed at my progress.
my advice is see gp with the wish for referral to have his meds changed xxx

I wouldn't have thought they want it to drop very quickly as that could cause issues in itself, and he hasn't been in hospital 24hours yet.
I would give the ward a ring and ask what time he will be reviewed today and if you can have an update afterwards. Ask that time to call back and who you should ask to speak to.

the mean pressure has dropped quite a bit in 24 hours. How urgently it needs to come down depends on symptoms/whether they think those symptoms are actually due to the BP/any evidence of end organ damage/how long it's likely to have been high. Not sure quite what you're looking for from MN - no one here can really give any sensible advice. Hope things improve soon.

@Greybeardy it was more to see if anyone had similar. Hospital aren't giving me any answers.

@Fannieannie63 thank you so much for this. He hasn't been on any medication it's only just popped up as he had some memory loss and hallucinations over the weekend x

It probably depends why his blood pressure is high. Perhaps if there is a particular medical crisis that is causing it, it might come down quickly once that's addressed.

However, the classic causes of high blood pressure (such as stress, being overweight, not enough exercise, too much caffeine, alcohol, salt, sugar, saturated fats, smoking etc) are not eliminated overnight, even with medication. I understand that it will take a good few weeks/months for the effect of the necessary lifestyle changes to result in a meaningful change in blood pressure.

Disclaimer: I am not in any way medical - I just have a DH who has recently been found to have high blood pressure.

I hope your Dad makes a good recovery.
