awful ear infection - when will my ear "pop"? any tips?

i've got an awful ear infection - it's very painful, and i've basically gone totally deaf in the affected ear. it's a horrible, weird sensation - i feel cut off from the world and can't tell how loud my own voice is etc. This is the second day of it. i saw the GP yesterday and she prescribed an antibiotic ear spray but it seems to have made it worse - my ear wasn't blocked until i started using that.
has anyone had similar experience, and if so, how long till your ear "popped" and you could hear again?
i'm not sure whether to sleep on the side of the bad ear or not - someone said you should sleep on the bad side so the infection doesn't go in any deeper but this may be rubbish.
Any tips/shared experiences?

miniegg. The worst pain (I have given birth twice) I have ever experienced was when I was sixteen and had an ear infection on holiday. Ruined Venice for me.
Just Paracetomol for the pain is all I can recommend.
Get better soon

yes, it's dire. i feel i might have caused it myself by fiddling with my ear (!) certainly won't be doing that again. just hope i get my hearing back!
