Urinary urgency after going to the toilet

Hi all

I know I really need to speak to my GP about this but getting an appointment is like hens teeth.

I'll preface this with saying I've always had what I'd consider a small bladder. Like an egg cup is what I say. As soon as I've drunk something I need a wee.

I had endometriosis surgery 2 years ago and they said a side effect from this might be temporary urgency issues. It sort of went away but has gradually returned.

However it has escalated significantly over the past 3 days. I can barely drink a sip without being desperate for a wee. I went to the toilet 4 times before work yesterday over a 1.5 hour period. All good volumes. Then throughout the rest of the day I felt like I needed to go but could only pass small volumes at a time but could pass more if I double voided. I must have gone to the loo 15 times during work alone.

Today I just need like I need a wee constantly. I only managed a good volume first things. I've had a warm bath as was able to go a bit more. I am passing some volume each time I go.

I have no pain or stinging. It doesn't smell.

I take Duloxetine and Cocodamol.

Could this be a UTI? I've had them in the past but alway experienced pain and felt unwell.

Thank you!

Yes, you need to be checked for a uti

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 01/06/2023 16:15

Yes worth checking but a cranberry supplement sorted me out really quickly.

I just feel very uncomfortable. Nothing worse than needing a wee and not having the relief when you go to the toilet! This evening I have lower back ache so I'm swinging towards infection. I called GP earlier but of course no appointments...

I would call 111 if you can't get an appt, they can probably prescribe antibiotics over the phone if necessary.

justasking111 · 02/06/2023 00:06

E mail surgery explaining that you now have lower back pain. A nurse sorted me out

Moonchild18 · 02/06/2023 00:25

You can call 111 and they may be able to prescribe over the phone. You can also pay for a prescription through the pharmacy, however they only give you 3 days worth which in my case wasn't long enough hence why I ended up calling 111 in the middle of the night.

Moonchild18 · 02/06/2023 00:27

Apparently you can also drop a urine sample in at your doctors surgery to be treated without an appointment, give them a call first just to check they'll accept it.

Thanks all. I've got an appointment this aft! After being offered 16 June they miraculously found one for today!

deflatedbirthday · 02/06/2023 15:01

@justasking111 the backache is getting worse and I'm very sweaty. I know it's a hot day but it feels more like me than the weather IYSWIM

Let us know how you get on, OP.

UTI for me! 🎉

My wee was the colour of Lucozade and the dip test light up like a Christmas tree. Trace of blood too.

I've been sent for a kidney scan next week due to some other health conditions to be overly cautious.

I've got Trimethoprim for the weekend.

Hooray, at least it's easily treated. Hope you feel better very soon 💐

justasking111 · 02/06/2023 20:16

@deflatedbirthday well that's great news. I do despair when something common for a woman that can become serious is ignored by the NHS. The surgery and pharmacy have posters, leaflets,, etc on more unusual illnesses but thrush, UTI, nothing at ours.

deflatedbirthday · 02/06/2023 20:25

Thanks all!!

Does anyone know if Canesten can be taken prophylactically?

I always get thrush after antibiotics..

I had similar to this but it wasn't urgent as such I just felt like I had to go even if I just went etc. for example if get up in the night with baby, need wee, feed her and then have to go to loo again before going back to sleep. I got tested for uti and that was clear. I then got referred and I was told to do bladder training. I had to hold my wee for as long as I could to retrain it from thinking it needed a wee at the smallest amount. It worked and actually it worked very quickly and I no longer have this issue. Not saying that would work for you but something to consider!

mrshenny · 02/06/2023 21:02

Just to add I was passing the smallest amounts too

You can get probiotics to take whilst on antibiotics to help with gut/thrush issues.

I use these ones:

Do you think you are avoiding hydrating yourself properly because if this urgency problem? Hope the antibiotics sort out the UTI.

New2020 · 09/11/2025 11:13

@mrshenny I know this is an old post , but I'm pretty stressed as I've just had a baby (csection) and finding the same that I feel like I need a wee straight after going. How long after bladder training did this get resolved? I'm worried there is a bigger issue of my bladder retaining urine

Hey, sorry I’ve been off MN for a while so haven’t seen this. It didn’t take long, maybe a couple of weeks of training and I felt normal again. I hope you’re issue has resolved and congratulations on your new arrival xx
