Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) has ruined my teeth.

I was reading an article the other day where one lady has zero teeth now after two HG pregnancies.

Mine aren't much better. 😭

I've had three HG pregnancies. Two o took to full term, one I had a medical termination after getting to the point of jaundice and potential liver failure (my first pregnancy). My second and third pregnancy I was sick all the way through but slightly better managed in that we both made it each time. Third time I was sick as they wheeled me OUT of the csection room and was given one last anti sickness med.

That's a lot of round the clock vomitting.
I've been asked by dentists if I am or have had bulimia.

My teeth are ruined.

Teeth missing having had to have them pulled, or with BIG metal fillings, some with chunks missing, some replaced with crowns (I think they're crowns) but now worn down so you can see the metal bits inside. They're just a mess. I feel so self conscious about them.

Anyone else have this long term side effect from HG?

Yes. I have just had a tooth removed. Another gift from HG pregnancy.

Hoping I don't loose any more

It's awful isn't it! I'm currently waiting to have a big back tooth pulled, then today a chunk of another tooth came away while I was eating. 😭

Most dentists seem to assume bulimia or at least ask if it's that or something else but I've had a couple of dentists be really rude and sharp with me, clearly judging me which is upsetting when I try to look after myself. 😔

I worry when I smile in public too, wondering if people can see in my mouth.

I have terrible teeth after three pregnancies. I have gum recession at the front now due to infection whilst pregnant. I wasn't really sick either.

Theygolowwegohigh · 31/05/2023 22:08

@arghtriffid oh gosh that's awful. I had actual read somewhere that pregnancy can have a bad effect on our teeth and gums even if not a HG pregnancy.

Feminist rant ahead but I honestly wish young girls and women were educated on all the dangers and risks of having children. Yes we will still perhaps go ahead but it will be a fully informed decision. Teeth and dental, pelvic floor, mortality rates, sickness, anaemia, stretch marks, hair and skin changes, total body shape changes, hormones all over the place, etc. It's not just 9 months and done, our bodies change forever!

I also have prolapse issues from my pregnancies too. Joys! 🙄 It's a good job they're cute kids ha ha.

Yes. And severe osteoporosis so I can't have implants.
I nag all my young female relatives to take their vitamin d supplements in winter. And to make sure they get hrt in a timely fashion.

Theygolowwegohigh · 31/05/2023 22:22

Oh I am nigglingly area of osteoporosis. Both mum and grandma had HG and have suffered with this. 😢

I also have lots of deficiencies eg aneamia and B12. I once got all my medical info from my online gp records printed out and there's chart graphs of all my bloods test results. You can clearly see dips in levels of certain things through my pregnancies (and a stressful parenting spell with my Sen child). They stand out hugely on the charts where my body has taken a huge hit.

@endofthelinefinally do you mean you can't have dental implants with osteoporosis?

OP posts:
endofthelinefinally · 31/05/2023 22:25

My dentist says not.

drpet49 · 31/05/2023 22:26

OP what you went through with HG sounds horrific!

endofthelinefinally · 31/05/2023 22:27

I am having zoledronate infusions for the osteoporosis and that is another big risk factor for any dental treatment.

Theygolowwegohigh · 31/05/2023 22:30

@drpet49 yes it was not the best. 😢

I had a sickness bug a couple of weeks ago and I actually have horrid anxiety flashbacks to my HG whenever I'm sick, it's awful.

My children have a huge age gap. I swore I'd never have another. Then someone changed my mind. Then toddler stage sort of age he changed his mind so I'm now older and yet again a single mum (with an even more ruined body ha).

@endofthelinefinally oh gosh I didn't know that. I hope the infusions help your osteo though.

Yep
2 HG pregnancies. 4 misting teeth now; 2 gaps, 2 bridges.

Mouthfulofquiz · 31/05/2023 22:37

I had this from a new dentist about 6 months ago. Asked me if I was bulimic in front of my children (luckily they don’t know what that means but I did have to explain afterwards! In a child appropriate way of course.) unfortunately I suffered very badly with morning sickness (24 hours a day) and another illness during pregnancy which made me vomit a lot. My teeth are shite now! Really soft and stained at the back.
