Migraine every Saturday morning!!

This is doing my head in, but why do I always wake up with a migraine every Saturday morning? I thought maybe it's because I sleep in a little longer, but I set alarm same time and this doesn't help. I work 2-3 hours every day so it's not really a change in work hours. Seriously confused and annoyed by it.

Do you go to bed later on the Friday night? Do you get woken in the night? Do you drink alcohol on a Friday night to unwind, or eat differently?

I often wake up on a Saturday with headache or migraine.

I think it’s stress. I love my job but it’s seriously full-on and I’m worn out by the weekend and struggling to switch off.

Is it caffeine withdrawal? Or do you do anything differently on Friday night compared to other evenings?

Mischance · 20/05/2023 21:42

"Holiday migraine" is a known thing. It happens when you have been stressed and then relax. My OH had this - I am sorry that you do too.

Was also going to say caffeine withdrawal. Used to happen to my dad, switching from office coffee to home coffee

I was going to add stress to this as well.. I get the same but work full on and then spend most weekends recovering.. and repeat!

AnnaMagnani · 20/05/2023 22:02

If you can't pinpoint any other change in your routine such as change in caffeine, going to bed, getting up, amount of alcohol then this is likely to be relaxation migraine.

Often known to also spoil a holiday.

If you are having migraines every week you need a preventer, or a better one if you are on one already.

Thinking about it, Fridays nights are stressful as husband isn't around to help with bed time routine and end up going to bed super late and exhausted. But apart from that, all other things mentioned above have been considered.

I used to have a migraine on Sundays but it was because I had a bacon and egg sandwich for lunch on Saturday.

The stressful bedtime sounds like it could be a factor. Nothing silly like central heating clicking in - ours can be set by day - so youre dehydrating overnight?

Thank you for the article. On reflection, this week has been very stressful and probably my stress hormones regulating again.

I also wake up very dehydrated, but not sure what to do about that. I open my eyes and my pounding head is there.
