Hello,
I went to my Dr today and was given the usual bloodwork. I was called back and was asked to give a couple viles more. The person who took the blood touched the area with no gloves, should I worry? I’m a really anxious person when it comes thing this and this is the first time someone has touched an open area with no gloves.

Hi,
in our NHS trust we are reducing use of gloves. I would expect the person taking blood would have used alcohol gel or washed hands before and so all will be fine.
Don't forget you can't clean gloves so they aren't necessarily as hygienic as you might think.

There’s studies showing that gloves give a false sense of hygiene/cleanliness as people don’t wash/change them enough.
People without gloves wash their hands much more.

It won’t be a problem

They don’t need gloves. Rare for ours to wear them here when drawing blood.

PinkPlantCase · 18/05/2023 21:46

No they don’t need to wear gloves, the hands would have been clean

We wear gloves when taking blood to protect ourselves, not the patient. The gloves are not sterile and my hands are probably cleaner as I wash and gel them all the time.
It will be fine.

So, someone touched your arm....?

notangelinajolie · 18/05/2023 23:36

And so you know gloves are cleaner because...

They should have cleaned the area with a special little alcohol wipe, their hands would be clean, you'll be fine.

My hospital has signs up now saying they're reducing glove wearing as it encourages better hand hygiene. They'll have washed hands before and after.

I don’t have anxiety and this wouldn’t even register with me as an issue. So I think it’s your anxiety talking, and you needn’t worry. I gave blood this week and I can’t tell you if the practitioner was wearing gloves or not - I think almost certainly not, if I concentrate on remembering. Please try not to worry.
