Experiences with Aspartame - is it so bad?

DP drinks pints of diet drinks a day and I'm sure that much sweetener cant be good. What is your experience and can anyone direct me to a factual, non-hysterical site as he wont listen to anything resembling hearsay or "hysterical American food faddists".
Me, I dont touch the stuff, I hate the aftertaste and I'd rather get some fruit juice and dilute it with fizzy water.

I did this at uni during a neuroscience course - aspartame (nutra-sweet) does affect short term memory if lots consumed

if you google "aspartame short term memory" some of the links are to actual scientific studies proving the link (in rats anyway!)

There's an article in my magazine about it - I'll have a look. I try to avoid the stuff like the plague, especially now am pregnant and experiments have shown it causes cancer in rat foetuses... Wouldn't let DS touch it either.

I'm really worried about this too - I have always avoided the stuff in foods, and now discover teenaged dd1 is putting it in her tea!

Memory loss thing, hmm, might point out she doesn't really want that atm with GCSEs!

My DH was strongly advised to avoid aspartame when he was diagnosed with skin cancer several years ago.
