Fatigue…low ferritin and vitamin D?

I have a 6 month old and ever since she’s been born I have been suffering from fatigue that goes beyond the usual sleep deprivation. Some weeks I will be fine, but then other days I will wake up feeling like I’ve been hit by a bus and it’ll last for around a week, especially bad when I’m hungry. It’s the type of fatigue that can’t be cured by sleeping - it’s bone deep.

I’m on thyroxine for an underactive thyroid, so I suspected that was the problem but today’s blood results say that my levels are fine. The only thing I was tested for that is slightly low is ferritin and vitamin D. Ferritin is 13ng/ml and vitamin D is 24 ng/ml. Google tells me that it’s on the bottom side of normal, but could it be the cause? I’ve also had a sore tongue and weakness in my hand so was thinking vitamin b12 deficiency, but apparently not! Has anyone had similar numbers and felt awful?

Normal isn’t the same as optimal.

That vitamin D level is low, assuming you aren’t uk? I’m not sure of the conversion readings but Google says it’s low.
Your ferritin is low end of normal also, normal is 12- 150 and you would feel a lot better at 100 than you do at 13!
You could do with the actual figures for B12 also and see if you can boost those levels too.

Hypothyroidism, low B12, Low vitamin D & low Ferritin are all linked. You would likely feel better in the upper ranges of normal rather than low end.

Vitamin D: 24 ng/mL

A vitamin D level of 24 ng/mL is considered low or inadequate. Low vitamin D may put you at increased risk for COVID-19, diabetes, and cancer, as well as certain autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases (such as multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s).

My ferritin levels were similar to yours and I felt as you described but had no idea why until a routine blood test showed low iron. I spent most of Easter weekend in bed as I was just so exhausted. I've been on iron tablets about a month now and feel loads better. You can get iron supplements from the pharmacy so it might be worth getting some.

Thank you so much! People keep on telling me it’s just tiredness from being a new mum so now I feel like a lot less of a wimp. I wanted to stay in bed all of Easter weekend too.

I have underactive thyroid and also am fatigued all the time. My GP always says my bloods are normal, but I saw a private GP who explained that they’re normal but right on the borderline and advised supplements. I take a daily multivitamin which includes vit D, plus every other day I take ferrous gluconate. I’ve only been doing it a few weeks but so far there’s been no digestive issues which I’ve had previously with ferrous sulphate or fumerate, which makes it much easier to keep up with taking them.

I have vitamin D deficiency. It's absolutely debilitating and bone tired is a good description. I get prescribed vitamin D, but it is this that is prescribed, 1, 3 times a week for 5 weeks and then once weekly afterwards is the dosage for a Vit D level less than 30. It helps.
