Pre-diabetes and extreme thirst?

I have pre-diabetes (after previously having gestational diabetes) although I’m only just within the qualifying range. I’ve been trying to cut down on sugar and refined carbs although sometimes slipping up. Recently I’ve been waking up extremely thirsty during the night or early morning. Could this mean I now have T2 diabetes or am I just not drinking enough water? Is it worth contacting my GP or just trying harder with the diet for now?

Extreme thirst is a recognised symptom of diabetes. I’d definantly contact your gp and get another blood test done.

Worth booking an appointment with practice nurse to review blood and urine sugar levels. They can spot test and arrange a full blood test if needs be.

I have pre diabetes OP (lower end of it) and get my HBA1c bloods done every 3 months - I pay privately and it's about £60 or so a time- I do it so I can check it's not getting any higher and it measures a 3 month average. I've eaten like a saint though and it's remained the same!

Are you overweight? Waking up thirsty in the middle of the night suggests to me that you are mouth breathing or having sleep apnoea and snoring, and then waking yourself up with a dry mouth.

Excessive thirst is a sign of diabetes, see your practice nurse.

Thanks for the responses. I’ll make an appointment. I’m slightly within the overweight range (size 14) but not massively. I do snore occasionally, especially if I’m ill but not every night.

Go get checked. My son was diagnosed as T1D last month and he had extreme thirst and was in DKA.

My dad was formally diagnosed with pre-diabetes but this was in USA where the threshold is very very low. He feels he reversed it with diet, never mentioned thirst either.
