What's happened to my knee?!!

My knee has randomly tonight appeared to have very 'bruised' veins(?) that weren't like that this morning?! Photo attached!

I haven't banged my knee or hurt myself, wasn't like that this morning, had trousers on all day, just got changed & noticed.
Can varicose veins appear that rapidly? Knee was totally normal this morning. No swelling in leg, little bit painful but nothing major, feel fine.

Husband seems to think it could be worrying, I wasn't bothered til he started saying that! Any thoughts...?

What's happened to my knee?!!

Have you been kneeling down doing gardening or something?

endofthelinefinally · 20/04/2023 21:48

You need to carefully examine your leg above the engorged veins for any sign of swelling, redness or tenderness.
Are you on oral contraception or pregnant?
Have you been immobile or dehydrated recently?

When you say little bit painful, can you elaborate?

No, nothing like that. Had a day off work, but been sitting at desk working mainly, done lots of ironing, been for a walk.
I am on my feet a lot as a teacher, so wouldn't be surprised if I got varicose veins but husband says you can't randomly get them appearing that quickly!

I'd be phoning 111 in case that's some kind of thrombosis

I'm not pregnant, not been immobile, not been on a flight.

Did go swimming yesterday for first time in ages, went in a sauna for a bit, otherwise life as normal working/kids etc.
I'd assumed was being ridiculous wondering if was something to worry about. Maybe I should do econsult for gp tmrw.

Just feels a little tender, but no swelling, no real pain & I hadn't noticed all day until I actually saw it tonight getting changed.

The sauna could have made you dehydrated possibly. I would at least be calling 111 about that

endofthelinefinally · 20/04/2023 22:00

I think you should talk to 111 because they will ask you the correct questions.

Thanks everyone. Have just rung 111, described what knee looked like, was just told to ring Gp in morning, so that's what I'll do!

Probably wouldn't have rung 111, so thank you for the encouragement.

Not a varicose vein, (I've got plenty🙄) looks more like a bruise. I've sometimes had something like that but much smaller on my knuckle or finger when I've very slightly knocked it on a vein. If you look carefully it appears to stem from a vein. You could try putting some ice on it but I expect it will disappear on its own. Mind you I'm the kind of mum that waits three days to take son to A&E to discover he has actually fractured his leg and frozen peas aren't a miracle cure😂

Ha, that's more the sort of thing I was thinking, just don't recall knocking my knee at all today, I've been in the house all day. Hopefully that's all it is, & I've made a fuss over nothing!

my approach sounds like yours, I usually completely ignore medical/accident stuff until I find out it's something really serious several days later!
