Going to A&E?

I've had constant diarrhoea for 4 days, unable to eat anything and half lost over half a stone.
I've tried Imodium but it's not helping, really severe abdominal cramps.

Do you think it's unreasonable to go to A&E? I feel very weak

Sorry I probably didn’t actually mean “ever” in the true sense of the word, I probably should’ve said i wouldn’t go to a&e if I’d had diarrhoea for only a few days like OP.

8 weeks like in the case of your mum is totally different and it doesn’t surprise me at all that she was fobbed off by her GP so I don’t blame you at all for taking her to a&e, it sounds like it was the best thing to do. I hope she’s ok x

And yet OP has been admitted, so she was completely correct to go to A and E when she did. Not sure why you are still insinuating that she was not?

Oh dear op. I had something similar last week that lasted for 6 days. Luckily I had Imodium and rehydration drinks in stock as it was over Easter weekend and dioralyte type sachets seem to be in very short supply in the shops and pharmacies around here.

I didn’t eat anything for 3 days then started slowly with one or two pieces of toast each day. Only now, 2 weeks after it started am I back to 3 normal meals a day.

It was grim and in my 45 years I’ve never had anything like it and nor has DH or dc. I believe that the rehydration drinks stopped me from becoming dehydrated and needing to go to hospital. Paracetamol worked well for the cramps.

I’m not insinuating anything of the sort!! I’m glad (now I’ve seen OP’s update) that she went and is getting treatment.

If you look at my first post, I said “I wouldn’t personally ever go to a&e for diarrhoea.
Only you know how you feel though”. “Personally” being the key word and then saying it depends how OP feels in herself.

That doesn’t mean anyone shouldn’t go to a&e for diarrhoea just because I said I wouldn’t! As per @VanGoghsDog’s post, sometimes it’s obviously needed. I’m just someone who is very reluctant to go to a&e unless my arm is falling off as I’ve had really bad experiences with it.

Hope that’s explained it for you.
