Best probiotics after stomach upset

Muchtoomuchtodo · 09/04/2023 20:02

I’ve never taken any probiotics before but am just getting over an incredibly nasty stomach upset.

I’ve been looking at probiotics to try to restore some balance in my gut but am pretty overwhelmed by the choice!

Can anyone point me in the right direction or advise any in particular please?

Kefir. A daily drink improves good gut bacteria in a couple of months. There was a program that tested stool samples before treatment & after treatment using various probiotics & kefir was the best.

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/04/2023 22:32

Symprove made a huge difference to me

Muchtoomuchtodo · 10/04/2023 10:59

Thanks, I’ll look into both of those.

I suffer from an autoimmune condition so it looks as if kefir isn’t recommended and I already need to time my morning medication carefully around my finely tuned morning routine so I’m not sure that the Symprove will work.

I’ve found this one that seems to have a good range of probiotic cultures and a prebiotic.

Has anyone tried it?

I use Alflorex. Best I've used and I've tried many, including Symprove and kefir.

bellac11 · 10/04/2023 15:48

How do people work out which ones are best, I notice from a quick look online theres tons of different ones all with different types of bacteria. Also whats the difference between pre biotic and pro biotic

Whenever Ive taken antibiotics the GP is always insistent I must use probiotics at the same time so I buy the drinks. I didnt even know they came in a tablet form

Lovemydaxie · 10/04/2023 15:59

Prebiotic feed the good bacteria, prebiotic supply the good bacteria. After a tummy upset you would need probiotic I think. It is trial and error, as what suits one person is no good for another. I would just try something and see how you get on. If you have a health food shop near you, I find they are very knowledgeable and helpful. That would be a good place to start. Good luck

Inkblue · 10/04/2023 16:05

What makes you think you can't take kefir if you have an autoimmune disease, (unless you are lactose intolerant, of course)? Live yoghurt is also a good way to boost microbiome as is kimchi and sauerkraut.

gkhg · 10/04/2023 16:17

I'm on the better vits you linked OP! I started taking them to improve my mental health, one month in and I felt amazing. I went from only being able to stomach one meal a day to eating 3 meals and snacks. I have so much more energy. They are the best on the market I believe (price reflects that)

Google told me what ingredients you need for the most affect. Then I had to read the ingredients of all the different brands. The ones OP had linked have everything in, some others have most but not everything

I read it here, but I’ve now found some conflicting information so I’m getting quite confused!

Goodness, Ive never seen that advice before. I'm immunosuppressed and have it every morning on my oats. I suppose the best advice would be talk to your doctor about it. Mine is very big on improving your microbiome so recommends all the pre and probiotics.

Thank you

Symprove have been very good for me.

also look at saccharomyces boulardii (Optibac are a good brand but you can get cheaper - I don’t find them as effective though) if you are having issues with diarrhoea.

Nimbostratus100 · 12/04/2023 02:34

no probiotics are going to improve anything about the bacteria in your guts. They are not even the right type of bacteria. Your internal flora is a BALANCE of over 1000 species.

but they are very dangerous if you are immunosuppressed/pregnant/ on chemo etc

mowly77 · 12/04/2023 02:48

@Nimbostratus100 how are they dangerous?? Genuinely interested as news to me. I’ve been treated for stage IV cancer for over a year on different lines of treatment & always take a pre & pro biotic. Not one medic has ever told me this was potentially harmful

cos you don't mess around ingesting live bacteria when you are immunocompromised! the balance of flora in your gut could be wrecked, if any of them get through - its on the list of warnings we have when ever I get chemo, along with undercooked eggs, and unpasturised cheese

Where are you even getting this information

It is basic science information available to everybody, and the warnings about not touching it if you are immuno suppressed is straight from my oncologist, - a standard warning like unpasteurised cheese

HBGKC · 18/04/2023 20:36

My doctor friend only recommends BioCare brand for any and all vitamins/minerals/probiotics/supplements; she says most of the others are worthless junk 🤷🏻 (and no, she doesn't work for them!)

Yes but that’s all bollocks though with no evidence base.

bagged salad isn’t on the list & it’s the biggest carrier of bacteria.

The balance of flora in my gut is wrecked from the hardcore cancer drugs & the antibiotics. I’ll keep on taking my good floras & eating in pasteurised cheese & undercooked eggs, life’s miserable enough.

it’s the cancer that’s killing me not a soft boiled egg.
