Can any STIs can be passed to children via normal contact?

Having just discovered that my 16 year old sister has turned to prostitution to fund her drug habit, I'm of course out of mind with worry for her, but have just had another awful thought. She lived with us until very recently (until she started using drugs) and she has had daily contact with my baby and toddler. I have found them sharing lollipops, blowing up balloons together etc...do you think there is any risk to my children if it turns out that my sister has contracted anything? Or am I being daft?

All help appreciated. Please don't bash me if I've made assumptions that I shouldn't have done, I'm shocked and panicky and probably not thinking straight.

Sorry hecate, meant to say - is the herpes virus only catching if you have a visible cold sore? Or does it lurk?

I think it's highly unlikely. Hope your sister sorts herself out soon.

The herpes virus does lurk but it's only catchable from an open sore afaik.
