Alcohol intake.. is this too much or ok?

Hi,

just a general question as I am curious, I enjoy having 9 pints of cider over 7 days (never go over and always have alcohol free days in between so 3 pints one day then a day off then another 3 pints) and I have one alcohol free week once a month. I still try to be healthy I just genuinely just enjoy the apple cider drink. Is this still safe seen as I have a few alcohol free days a week and I have one whole week off once a month or is it really bad where I need to cut down even further?

Thank you in advance

If you go by the numbers, it's too much.

9pints is approx. 20-27 units.
The recommended limit for women (presuming you are a woman) - is 14 units.

If you're drinking to feel drunk, three times a week (even if you have weeks off) - that feels psychologically unhealthy.

Sorry drinking 'enough' to feel drunk... not just to feel drunk.

And when I say 'drunk' I mean everything from tipsy to paralytic.

Forgot to say the cider I enjoy is the 4.5% one I wouldn’t get higher content then that.

There is no ‘safe’ limit but the recommendations are to drink no more than 14 units (average 2 units per pint).
A woman drinking 6 units-3 pints- in one sitting is classed as binge drinking and is not advised as it can cause as much harm as daily drinking less units.

However, plenty of people drink more with no issues.

40 units per week is also too much - almost 3x more than recommended.

TrianglePlayer · 30/03/2023 18:26

I personally think this sounds ok. Especially as you have nights off and a whole week off every month!

Horlickscadbury · 30/03/2023 18:29

I’m not even in denial when I say I’m not an alcoholic hence why I’m able to have a whole week off every month with no temptation i genuinely enjoy the drink. If I’m seeing a large number saying 9 pints is too much I can cut it to 6 as I am more health conscious then not :)

27 units and 40 units? 😂 Where has that come from? 4.5% cider. Roughly 2 units per pint defo not 27 - 40 units I would be out cold 😂 thank you for your answer anyway

This is putting in 3x4.5 percentage cider 3 times per week.

It's 23.7 units. It's over the recommended amount but it's not a disaster.
I would think about why you need to have 3 pints. What's the context? And are you socialising or drinking alone?
If you can cut down to an alcohol free week why not just cut down over all and keep within the recommended limit?

Mindymomo · 30/03/2023 19:10

Nurse told my DH that he should have 2 clear days without alcohol after drinking. We’ve both cut down on drinking as DH liver levels are raised, we now only drink on 2 days per week and only a couple of drinks, so about 12 units each week.

Todaynotalways · 30/03/2023 19:32

sorry @Horlickscadbury - my maths was ALL OVER THE SHOP - I blame being excruciatingly tired.

As you were.

Horlickscadbury · 30/03/2023 19:45

Looks like I am cutting down to 6 pints a week then 😂thanks everyone…. @Todaynotalways thats absolutely fine, 40. Units would be a rehab job for anyone. Thanks everyone I’ve decided to cut to 6 pints a week.

9 pints of 4.5% cider = 24.4 units of alcohol.

The recommend limit of alcohol per week for women = 14.

So yes - you are drinking too much (over 43% over the recommended limit per week).
