persistant cough in adult

Can anyone advise please.
In August I had a chest infection. I let it clear on its own which it did eventually but then came back in October. GP perscribed antibiotics which cleared it for a few weeks. But since then its come back. It got to the stange where one day my chest would feel tight and wheezy, then for a few days I would be coughing lots of phlem and then it would go for a day or 2 before starting the cycle again. I went to the GP 2 weeks ago as it was keeping us all awake at night and he perscribed stronger antibiotics. However he did say that my chest is clear and it isnt a infection. Since finishing the course of antibiotics its started again and last night it felt tight with a dry cough again.
What I dont understand is if my chest is clear them why am I persistantly coughing phlem. What could it be?

could it be asthma? Coughing esp at night is one of the symptoms

Although there HAS been a "persistent" cough going around here. Me and the girls have had it and it seemed to take AGES to go away... Weeks, literally. I know I am not the only one in the area to have suffered from it.

long shot this - but are you on any medication that could be causing it? my mum had a terrible cough as a side effect from bp medication (ace inhibitors)

kbaby that is what have had for the last 6 months..doctor has suggested it might be acid burn ie. stomach acid coming into throat causing burning and coughing with certain foods..he gave me some Omeprazole and said if they don't work will be off to nose and throat specialist (they don't work btw)...also get the wheezy chest tight feeling...have they asked you to do a peak flow chart..(they give you an inhaler and check if this affects your breathing out capacity)..it's very irritating isn't it...have you been to the doctor recently? it might be worth going again!

Hi Holly.
The gp prob thinks im neorotic as ive been back now about 4 times. They say its not asthma as im not wheezy, even though ive explained I am at night. Ive got a appointment for tomorrow as I finished tha last cours eof antibiotics last week and its come back again. The excuse they keep giving is that after a infection it can take 4 months for the irritation to clear up. Its just really annoying as I just cough all the time and some nights im wide awake coughing.
