Painful, inflammed toe joint - any ideas?

Yesterday morning I got up to find my toe joint (second to biggest toe, the middle joint) was sore to touch. I didn't think much of it - even went for a run and walked a lot during the day and it was OK.

Then is bed last night it was very painful. Dull ache when I stayed still and absolute agony if I tried to move, bend or flex toes. When I got up at 5AM to DD I could hardly walk to her room. This morning that toe was a little swollen and red/inflammed looking. Doesn't hurt to touch either side of that joint, but on the joint where it is red is AGONY! It has eased a bit during the day and I took some Ibuprofen for the pain. Can walk OK now, but still very sore to touch.

Googled it (as NHS direct only taking emergeny calls) and came up with gout - unlikely I'd hope for my age/lifestyle/gender - or an infection of the joint.

Any one had this? Any ideas?

Does sound like gout tbh. Get a blood test done to see if your levels of euric (sp) acid are high.

Do you suffer with psoriasis? If so, it could be psoriatic arthritis.

corn?

Sorry but that's almost certainly gout. WHich is not just confined to old men who drink too much - and is a horrible, agonising illness, so deep sympathy too you.

Yikes - that sounds a bit worrying. I really hope not. What does it mean if I have?
