A thread for anyone who needs to gain a little weight....

Hi, I have been very ill with a pre existing condition for all of january, nearly died with breathing problems ect and gone down to 41kg (from 45kg at 5ft1).

I wouldn't mind but I look skinny and pale and have lost my strength for running. I need to gain some weight back so that I have some more energy for getting fit again!

Does anyone else want to join me/ has kids that want to gain? I am vegan but you don't have to be, and it would be great to have company!

Here's what I ate today:

B: Ready brek with raisins and soymilk
1 apple, 4 rice cakes with peanut butter

S: Half of a rather fattening date and walnut flapjack

5k run and core training

S: An orange, a carrot, and a pear. Some cucumber

D: 1 sweet potato with homemade low fat hummus, a bowl of steamed broccoli, and a veggie sausage. Three sundried tomatoes in oil.

S: Some soya yoghurt and the other half of the flapjack. 1 apple.

All in all I think that was a good effort and I didn't feel too full from it. I don't really count calories right now but try and get enough protein and high energy healthy food.

Any takers? xxx

I suppose you could adopt a similar approach to the meal plans devised for people recovering from anorexia?

On my daughter's plan are all sorts of ways to condense calories into easy to eat portion sizes, so there are things like malt loaf, full fat/higher calorie yoghurts. In the same way that people trying to lose weight make switches from high fat to lower, could you substitute low fat hummus for one with a little more oil?

shrooms · 07/02/2008 10:42

Thanks for your reply. The reason I don't add oil to hummus was just that I like it to be a low fat protein source for the family as vegans can often eat alot of nuts for protein! That is a idea though. I may try adding a bit of flax oil for extra omega -3.

How is your daughter getting on now? - I remember your thread a few months ago x

thanks for asking, unfortunately she discharged herself this week - some way ahead of time

I'm alternating between cold fury (we haven't got a proper discharge package by way of outpatient monitoring and support in place yet) and trying to be optimistic and supportive of her choice

the alongside sort of approach is also to see if you can lower your activity levels in any way I suppose? good luck with it all and hope you are back to full strength soon

Mercy · 07/02/2008 11:20

I certainly need to put some weight on (but think I'll give the running a miss ).

I read somewhere that trying to gain weight is harder than losing it; apparently a pound (or possibly 2) per month is to be expected.

Anway, so far today:-

Breakfast: 2x Weetabix with semi-skimmed milk, 1 cup of tea

Snack: 1 muesli bar, 1 banana

shrooms · 07/02/2008 12:55

Vacua - I'm so sorry or all that you are going through with your daughter. I watched my parents go through the same with my sister and she was also very difficult. I know it is hard not to be angry with them but they just don't have the same way of thinking as us. There is a tendency to think they can deal with it and that they are in control when we can see that that's not the case I suppose only time will tell if she will improve which is so frustrating isn't it?

Mercy - thanks for joining me! I have cut down alot on the exercise as I am not allowed to push my lungs very hard just yet. However the sooner I can get fit again the better off I am in myself (I have COPD - not from smoking but from chronic asthma and it's hard work to keep my lungs clear so running helps).
I am only running about 15 miles a week and cross training a bit with is much less than before I got ill!

Anyhow I have now regained an appetite from not wanting anything all day everyday, so the exercise helps me feel hungrier.

So far today:

B: A smallish bowl of dorset spelt muesli and soymilk, a pear. Cup of lemon green tea.

S: Two rice cakes with pb and jam.

can I tentatively join you? I dont actually need to gain weight but am in danger atm of it slipping off me. I'm 51kg at the moment at 5' 5" so its not too bad. When I'm low I dont see the point in eating - it just doesnt appeal and I find it hard to restart.
I'm not sure how healthy it is for me to be in this thread.

today: bit of yogurt. two slices toast and half a cup of soup. Feel fainty but cant persuade myself to eat.

Actually, I don't think I will help anyone by being on this thread.

shrooms · 07/02/2008 17:38

You don't have to contribute anything to the thread if you don't want to - but if it helps you to keep a food diary than that's fine.

The problem sometimes is that we get used to eating very little and the stomach shrinks so you want even less. Could you try smoothies and easy things like that to get the calories? You could just have a bowl of cereal or something?

OP posts:
BadKitten · 07/02/2008 18:13

yeah - I ought to have something. Going to go and get our cat from vet in a few minutes. maybe I'll fancy something when I've got her.
Its scary how quickly the way I view food changes. Generally i've got a very good attitude but it only takes a couple of meals for me to lose that.

So... What are you having for tea?

Mercy · 07/02/2008 20:05

Hello Badkitten

I've no idea how much I weigh tbh, I tend to go by how I feel and look . I understand how you feel though; I can eat a reasonable amount during the day but sometimes by the evening food is the last thing on my mind. I'm just really tired and fed up ('scuse the pun) by then.

In addition to my earlier post I have eaten:-

A veg samosa and half an avocado for lunch

Leftover meatballs & spaghetti from the dc dinner

Am about to eat sea bass fillet, new pots and steamed broccoli.

Mercy · 07/02/2008 20:08

Forgot to say this is a good day in terms of eating for me (although bad on the fruit and veg)

BadKitten · 07/02/2008 22:00

well done Mercy
dh went shopping and I managed to relax enough to eat half a shop pizza. Its calories even ifs not ideal.
I hope you enjoyed your sea bass, I've never cooked it at home.

shrooms · 07/02/2008 23:00

Hiya gals hope you are eating well - just keep perservering and eventually you'll enjoy food more IMHO

Continued from earlier:

L: Baked sweet potato with hummus and sundried toms in oil. Cucumber salad.

Soy protien shake

S: Apple, banana, walnuts and raisins

6km run and three loads of strength and cond. circuits.

D: Red cabbage salad, then a can of baked beans mixed with sweetcorn in the microwave. Don't judge me it was 10pm by the time I got to eat this!
Some soya yoghurt.
