What order should you brush, floss and mouthwash in? ...and why?

I've always flossed then brushed then mouthwash.

7Worfs · 11/01/2023 12:56

Floss, brush, mouthwash is the correct order.

ShippingNews · 11/01/2023 12:59

Floss to remove any food particles between the teeth. Brush to clean all surfaces. Mouthwash to freshen / kill any germs.

planefullofotters · 11/01/2023 12:59

Don’t use mouthwash after brushing, you’ll get rid of the good stuff.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/01/2023 12:59

I brush then floss as the hygienist told me too. I don't use mouthwash regularly.

I brush then floss as the hygienist told me too. I don't use mouthwash regularly.

I’ve been trying this recently after also being told it by the hygienist but it just feels wrong and I don’t like it.

PartnersInCrime · 11/01/2023 13:01

Floss then brush, mouthwash at different times i.e. lunch time

gjkufbb · 11/01/2023 13:03

My dentist said to floss, mouthwash then brush. Mouthwash will remove all the toothpaste from your teeth that are protecting them if you do that step last

HaddawayAndShite · 11/01/2023 13:04

Yes to skipping mouthwash. Or before brushing. No rinsing either, as it rinses all the fluoride away. I can’t stand doing it though.

Purpleparsley · 11/01/2023 13:06

So brushing needs to be last basically

Floss brush floss

hobbledyhoy · 11/01/2023 13:08

Brush then floss and only spit don't rinse or use mouthwash as the fluoride in it is lower than toothpaste. Told by my hygienist

RalphieRooBear · 11/01/2023 13:10

Floss, mouthwash, brush.

Cranarc · 11/01/2023 17:36

I floss then brush. I use interdental brushes on most days in which case I use them last after flossing and brushing. No mouthwash.

Reggiebo · 11/01/2023 17:38

My dentist told me last week to brush last. I have sensitivity and use sensitive tooth paste. If you mouth wash last then you flush it away.

Littlemissprosecco · 11/01/2023 17:49

Dentist here!
Leave the toothpaste on, don’t rinse it away. You get maximum Fluoride benefit that way. If you floss after brushing you have the added benefit of pushing fluoride directly through the contact points of your teeth where most decay starts. It’s muckier but floss after brushing without rinsing.

Homedeco · 11/01/2023 17:53

I brush then floss.

Brushing removes say 90% of debris between my teeth; then flossing focuses on what’s remaining afterwards. Feel like I’d have to put more effort into flossing before brushing, because my teeth haven’t had that once over so there would be extra debris

My teeth are perfectly healthy - I have zero build up. Whenever I go to my dentist for a check up, they refuse to do a scale and plush as there’s nothing to remove.

Homedeco · 11/01/2023 17:55

Mouthwash is subjective, I personally like to use it after brushing but my dentist advises to just use mouthwash throughout the day but not specifically after brushing.

I just do a hybrid routine where I’ll brush my teeth at eg 7am then use mouthwash at 7:45am just before I leave the house.

Montague22 · 11/01/2023 18:01

I actually alternate! I don’t use mouthwash though.
So sometimes floss if I can feel food, then brush afterwards.
Otherwise brush, then floss and then feel smug that my teeth are extra clean. They feel clean when you brush, but so much cleaner when you floss too 😁

Montague22 · 11/01/2023 18:02

Oh and I do use interdental brushes too, usually before or after flossing. I don’t feel right if I don’t- even do all this camping 🤣

shewolfsout · 11/01/2023 18:11

Before bed I brush, then floss, don't rinse.
In the morning I use mouthwash when I get up, and brush after breakfast/ before leaving the house. Sometimes I floss in the morning too because my teeth are crowded and hard to clean between, and I don't want bits in my teeth. Sometimes I skip the bedtime flossing because I'm too tired, so it balances out.
A use mouthwash after lunch sometimes, especially if I've been eating something stinky like garlic, but only on days I'm home which aren't that frequent

kafkascastle · 11/01/2023 18:31

If you mouthwash after brushing you will rinse out all the fluoride in the toothpaste, same as if you rinse your mouth. Dentist told me not to do it.

slamwich · 11/01/2023 20:56

I brush floss and brush lightly again.

FellForTheWrongUnAgain · 11/01/2023 21:00

My dentist says mouthwash, brush then floss

MistyRock · 12/01/2023 11:17

planefullofotters · 11/01/2023 12:59

Don’t use mouthwash after brushing, you’ll get rid of the good stuff.

Exactly this. Mouth wash should be first or in between meals. I don't rinse after brushing at all as we need to fluoride etc in the toothpaste left on the teeth.
