Weird red rash round dd's mouth - could it be an allergy to Erythromycin (any drs out there?)

She has been on it for several days (5 I think?) and I have noticed a slight red rash round her mouth, a bit like the one sophable's dh used to get when he ate tomatoes (I know you don't know you but ykwim!)

Now, it has only been mild. Not raised, not rough just red. Tonight however it looks very red. Should I do anything? (god knows what)

Hi CD
allergy to erythromycin is v unusual but not impossible. I know because I thought I was allergic to it (v allergic as a child and got a rash when on it once) and always much surprise when I announced it at hospitals, to GPs etc. Then in the end I HAD to go on it for something and they monitored me and I was fine! So the initial childhood rash was something different.

I think if it is only around her mouth and not causing hivey stuff on the rest of her body (feet are often the first place to react) then it may be coincidental.

sorry I meant v allergic to penicillin as a child

LittleMy34 · 04/02/2008 20:44

has she been eating Marmite? DS1 sometimes get a red rash around his mouth if he gets a lot of Marmite on there, something to do with the yeast.

CountessDracula · 04/02/2008 20:45

Thanks

No she hasn't been eating or drinking anything different to usual that I can think of which is why I suspect the antibs

I think this is teh first time she has had them though so techically not possible really to be alleric non?

I'm allergic to Erythromycin, or at least had a reaction (rash) as a child, haven't tried since.

Has she had any new foods recently? Sounds like a mild contact reaction, but I'd get a dr to check it out if it hangs around/gets worse, or if it makes her uncomfortable.

I am allergic to Erythromycin and penicillin mine starts as a rash of small red pin prick spots and ends up like sunburn.

Elibean · 04/02/2008 20:55

dd gets this when she eats tomatoes, every time.

But I was allergic to tetracycline as a child (not had any since) and that was a bumpy rash, on my body.

LardyMardyDaisy · 04/02/2008 21:01

Is the likelihood of a rash mentioned as a possible side effect in the blurb that comes with the pack?

I'd call the docs tomorrow (or tonight if you are worried) as the blurb usually tells you to mention any unusual or unwanted side effects.

ajandjjmum · 04/02/2008 21:06

Probably not the case at all, but a situation close to my heart at the moment!

Ds has had dry lips, which seemed to develop into a kind of rash around the corner of his mouth. He's just been diagnosed with impetigo - and I've been half ignoring it for a week.

Just a thought - hope your little one is ok soon.

CountessDracula · 04/02/2008 22:41

Thanks - this doesn't really look like impetigo as it is more widespread

Will take her to the dr tomorrow if it hasn't cleared up. ACtually come to think of it she is going to a friend after school whose mother is a ~Dr so can ask erh

Funnily enough CD, I took ds to our own GP on Friday and he diagnosed and started treating him for cellulitis.

It was a friend who is a GP who looked at him on Sunday, and said it's definitely impetigo. How lucky were we!
