Omeprazole causing worse pain than gastritis?!

Gettingonabitnow · 06/01/2023 15:28

Uhhh, I’m at the end of my tether. I have erosive gastritis, confirmed by endoscopy.

Tried lansoprazole, gave me awful diarrhoea and pain. Switched to omeprazole, I’m on day 6 of that and have worse stomach ache that the gastritis, with a really sharp pain under my right rib.

any experience or advice gratefully appreciated x

Have you tried esomeprazole? I find it effective, but one of the other drugs I tried beforehand (sorry can't remember the name) just seemed to make things worse.
Hope you get sorted OP

No I haven’t actually, I just went straight to omeprazole. Thank you.

Sorry I didn't come straight back - I was given a couple which were useless/worse than the problem itself and then was eventually prescribed esomeprazole which worked for me.
You can buy it off the shelf in Boots - Nexium Control - it's much dearer that way than on prescription though!

Also NB I am not a doctor Grin

Hi did you find something that helped in the end? I'm experiencing the same rib pain with omeprazole so wonder if you tried another drug as suggested that worked ? Fingers crossed for you

Arniesleftleg · 28/01/2023 17:31

Sorry to hear this, it's just awful isn't it?
I've got GORD, hiatus Hernia and reflux as well as poor digestive motility. I've found nothing that works, but on doing research the omeprazole, lansoprazole and esomeprazole are only for short term use and can actually make things worse. Might be worth chatting to your GP about a referral to a dietician through the gastroenterologist.
I've had the possibility of an op mentioned but Im definitely changing my diet to help with the reflux as I'm now recognising triggers.

Hope you get it sorted.

Esomeprazole here too. No issues.

MargaritaRita · 28/01/2023 17:36

Just to mention I am going into my third year on Eso. First year 40mg pd. Second year and for the foreseeable 30mg pd. I have read up on the long term issue and side effects, but the benefits outweigh the risks for me. I don't have GERD etc. but have had gastric bleeds, and this is the protection. I take daily aspirin also, and eso helps counterract the effect of NSAID aswell, or so the doc says!

Hi. No I just stopped taking it and am awaiting a gp appointment to discuss it further. It got to the point where I was so bloated and gassy I could barely eat x

Omeprazole made me incredibly gassy which in turn caused stomach pain, do you think that is what it is? I kept up with the omelrazole for about 6 weeks and it did die down a little, but not completely. I gave up taking it in the end and tried to manage my symptoms with diet rather than medication. Successful perhaps 60% of the time. I hadn't realised there were other options out there!

Noteworthworking · 29/01/2023 10:03

I tried omeprazole and lansoprazole and had similar reaction. Now on pantoprazole and no issues at all.

WildDamsel · 29/01/2023 10:12

Thank you all! I've just stopped the omeprazole as finished the course and the rib thing is improving so think it was a reaction to the medication

Butningembers · 11/02/2024 15:50

@WildDamsel I'm actually thinking I have a similar issue. Had endoscopy last week but it looked fine although was never told to stop omeprazol. Doc said to stop it and see but I do think symptoms have slightly improved although still there
Possibly wondering if I did I to ally have ulcers which cleared and now omeprazol is just making my stomach acid too low. How knows 🤷🏻‍♀️

WildDamsel · 11/02/2024 16:02

My stomach is worse a few months after coming off PPIs and now the GI Dr thinks it's SIBO causing acid reflux type symptoms, going to try low fodmap type diet for a bit and if that doesn't help work then metronidazole to kill off the bacterial overgrowth.. Just hope they are right!

Just been using Nexium for drug induced acute Gastritis. Really good. I don't get on with Lanzaprole. Turns my bowels to water.
