Antibiotics & Steroids for Chest Infection

I’ve got a bad chest infection incl. the horrendous peeing cough that seems to be making the rounds. Finally managed to see a GP, she prescribed antibiotics and steroids, which is apparently the ‘rescue package’. I was a bit wary of the steroids but have started taking them, but now I’ve read that they only work for chest infections in people who have asthma or COPD already, which I don’t.

Has anyone here without asthma taken antibiotics & steroids and did they do the trick? TIA

They work like a charm together! The steroids will reduce any inflammation in your lungs which will help calm the cough down while the antibiotics work on killing off the infection.

Surely your GP knows best? They are medically qualified to prescribe the medication needed.....

Why question that?

I have that combo 4-6 times a year for chest infections and it kicks them into touch in 5-7 days. Why would you do a medical degree when you can just Dr Google everything Hmm

I am on antibiotics at the moment and off sick (feeling guilty!). Crap at taking time off as impacts on others.
However, I had the peeing cough before Christmas. Then sinus thing and finally horrendous stabbing headache caused doc thinks by sinus compressing a nerve. Took an age to get to see a doctor. I have been told that might need steroids and clearly can be combined with antibiotics.
This virus has been the gift that keeps on giving...

Steroids help open the airways so you can clear mucus and infection more easily and breathe effectively.

steroids work by reducing inflammation which causes the swelling of airways in pneumonia.

steroids are not the devil.
they are very effective and have very few side effects if used correctly, especially if used short term.

I hope you feel better soon!
