Tooth extraction

I've had a rough 2 weeks. Indescribable pain, 2 sets of antibiotics, one failed root canal and tooth extraction.

Dentist said I had an infection in my bone and to finish my antibiotics - which I'm doing.

Firstly, what should I expect to feel after an extraction. It was 2 days ago and I feel sore in tooth site, bruised cheek but also very very emotional.

Is this normal?

Plus - I'm terrified of the infection taking hold again. Especially with Christmas. What should I look for?

See now the thought of potential infection with an implant site puts me right off at the moment!!

has it been a painful process @NecklessMumster

NecklessMumster · 23/12/2022 23:20

It's a long process and the actual implanting of the titanium rids was a bit uncomfortable but no pain, easier than an extraction. It's just a little gum boil that comes up and down, no pain ( not many nerve endings in your jaw bone apparently), think I was just a bit unlucky

@SnarkyBag how's things?

Hope you managed a decent Christmas?

Curious to know how your infection site is doing?

I'm now 8 days post extraction and still sore. Nothing like the pain I was in, but gum sore and jaw achy especially after food. No frame of reference as to what is normal..

@Tonicandgin hi there

well I did end up with an infection and had to get antibiotics which do seem to be doing the trick. Other than it being a bit tender and sore I haven’t had much pain and didn’t even have pain with the infection really. I just had a foul taste in my mouth and ds kindly informed me I smelt rank! The blood clot came out the day after I started taking antibiotics which freaked me out but again no pain and I’ve been super careful with the salt water rinsing and have still yet to have any solid food. I’m going to stick with rinsing and soft food for another week to be on the safe side.

Today is the first day I’ve felt slightly human though up until now I’ve felt rubbish and very tired although a lot of that had been because I’ve felt so anxious.

I do know for sure that I am not going to go down the implant route once my braces come off! I can’t face anymore dental work or potential infections! I’ll learn to live with whatever gap is left.

Oh god I had en extractions and a bone graft for an implant on 12 December and I'm still reeling. Previously had a wisdom tooth out and it was fine. But this was horrendous

It's a front too with a failed crown so I now have a denture until this heals.

It's been so tough. Had the extraction and then went back to work two days but I couldn't do it I was in so much pain so had the last two days of term off (secondary teacher!) and spent four solid day on the sofa taking ibuprofen and codien every four hour day as night. In the Wednesday I woke up at 4.30 and and it felt like a red hot poker in my face.

I wanted to put my head in a vice I was in so much pain and the stupid denture was so painful. But also so traumatic. The gap is huge and the denture is hideous. But I can at least now bear it in my mouth for a whole day.

It's been a very traumatic. I am not looking forward to the implant surgery then the abutment and then the crown! Nightmare. I will have two days off next time. I'm 42.

Gosh @mincepiepie that sounds horrific you poor thing.

I’ve also had a wisdom tooth out and I hardly even remember it as an event! I honestly had no qualms about the extraction in the run up to it.

I hope the rest of your dental treatment goes well.

@SnarkyBag you and @Tonicandgin
have been suffering terribly too.

I have a had an nearly three weeks since my extraction/bone graft and I'm only just recovered.

I called the dentist after 4 days and he said call back after 7 days I'd still not right and I saw hime and he refitted the denture and took the stitches out. Said it was healing beautifully Blush
