Ferritin of 5.5

Hi everyone, has anyone any experience of low ferritin (5.5)? I got my blood test results back this morning and I’m surprised. I’m more tired than normal but put that down to working full time with two young children. I’m also more down and anxious but again, two young children! My hair has always been thick so can’t say I’ve noticed a massive difference there. Could the result be wrong, or am I lucky not to have more symptoms?!

I’ve been prescribed iron tabs once a day but they didn’t agree with me in pregnancy and made me really constipated. Shall I ask for an alternative, or will this be the best way to go? Any advice gratefully received!

Why not take the iron and see how it goes? Have had side effects come and go when I’ve been on it in the past so maybe it’ll be better this time?

I was recently prescribed iron for low ferritin, the GP said taking one every other day is just as effective as daily and tends to reduce digestive symptoms.

Thank you both, that’s really helpful! I’ll give it a go and see what happens!

The low iron is massively adding to your symptoms.
make sure you take it with a meal and orange juice. Hopefully side effects will be minimal. They can give you alternative preparations if that still doesn’t help.

Thanks, that’s good to know that they can give alternatives! I’m hoping that iron will make me feel like a new woman…
