Hi

Hubby away on skiing holiday and tells me today that he went to Drs on Tuesday and has been diagnosed with kidney stones again he has one that is 8mm big (ouch). This is his third attack in 11 years and he also has cysts on his kidneys as well.

What i'm trying to ask what can i do to help him in trying not to get them again. He has given up adding salt to food already and am trying to get him to give up drink.

TIA

I had one 18mm by 23mm, a veritable boulder! No wonder my back hurt for years! I had surgery twice.

There is no rhyme or reason why some people get them and there are different types.

I did a diet diary and urine collection test for a week, had gallon bottles to take to the hospsital and they test it, analyse it and correlate it to your diet.

it didn't prove why I get them, though high protein diets can be at fault, like the Atkins Diet

A lot of 'good' foods can be a problem too, like spinach, broccoli, kale, all iron rich foods, but good for other health reasons.

I have read about something called Quebra Pedra -stone breaker, it is herbal and supposed to work, here

It depends on what is causing the stones. Did they analyse the stone to find out what it was made of? Or have they done a study of his urine? Once they know the composition, then they can suggest drugs/diet changes to avoid another attack.
Until then, lots and lots of water can't hurt for your poor DH.

He has just got back from Bulgaria still in pain and is due to see his GP tomorrow, still hasn't passed the stone. But the Dr did say that he has several larges cysts on his other kidney and that they would need draining.

Still will wait and see what the GP says, he was due to give blood this week and that will have to be cancelled and he has a rare blood group that they always need.

Thanks once again for all your messages of support and help.

Ow, my husband had 3 episodes too, horrid busisness.

His turned out to be connected to his parathyroid, maybe worth asking his GP about it?
