Should I be trying to get a strep A swab done?

I’ve had a persistent sore throat now for around a week. Only comes in at night. I have no fever, my glands are up on my neck and painful. Otherwise I’m feeling okay and in the day I can’t seem to feel a sore throat so I don’t know why it’s so painful when I swallow at night!!!

my kids have also been ill this week and have complained of sore throats. Should I wait longer for it to clear or would you reach out to the GP tomorrow?

I've had a sore throat for a couple of weeks and definitely just have a common virus. It's clearing up now. When I had strep throat I was so unwell. Fever, stomach pain, headache, joint pain. Can't see a GP doing a swab with your symptom.

Should be an s on the end of symptom!

lovelilies · 04/12/2022 23:47

Why would you call the GP if you're not feeling unwell?

Justwingingitox · 04/12/2022 23:53

I've had an on and off sore throat for over a week now, along with a niggly cough. I've assumed mine is viral.
Yours probably is too. Especially if that's just your only symptom.
If its only at night time mainly - are you sure it's not being caused by dry air in your room/home?

I’ve just never had this before with no other symptoms. It’s weird!!!

By the way I am the queen of inaction so your replies have made me feel much better. I’m the least likely person to bother the doctor unless I have to. I just have never had a persistent sore throat and enlarged glands around my throat without also having a cold or feeling lethargic.

covid?

Do you use a spray at night? Something like difflam is good for pain

The swab takes days to get a result and you don't sound very ill so I wouldn't bother

RudsyFarmer · 05/12/2022 07:07

I’m trying to sort it using a spray and lemsip occasionally. It’s just a persistent sod.

I've had strep throat many times, it's a virus and guess what, it goes away by it's self usually. Invasive Strep a is different, you have a fever, you have a rash, you have a weird tongue ... If you have other symptoms then of course speak to your gp, if it's just a sore throat then it's not likely to be serious, use your judgement
