Health anxiety- Lymphocytes? Any doctors?

Hi- I had a blood test today as requested from the GP due to unintentional weight loss. I love a healthy lifestyle and im young.

I got my test results on the NHS app a few hours later and My lmphocytes have came back pretty high and very high off the chart. Google is scaring me and telling me it's blood cancer which is scaring me as the first symptom of that is unexplained weight loss. Can someone please reassure me that they are this often and it's generally a very common infection of some sort.

I know I sound pathetic but I suffer badly with health anxiety.

Please don't Google, I have done that in the past and its not helpful. It will always come back with the worst case scenarios. Have you arranged a follow up with your GP to discuss your results?

Is can simply be because your body has been or is currently fighting off an infection.

Of course cancer is on the extreme scale but if you've been poorly recently, or see about to get poorly your white cell count can increase loads.

Also just depends on how your body reacts to fighting things off, some peoples cell count shoots up more than others.

If it's urgent you'll hear from them. Just call the GP and explain you're incredibly anxious and want to talk through results

Thank you. I think what scares me is that the symptom that made me go to the GP was the unexplained weight loss which is the first cancer symptom. And I've also read that it's the most common cancer for women in my age group.
I'm hoping I have an infection I'm unaware of.

I'm going to call on Monday. I've never rang for results- do I wait until the first part of the day (people booking same day appointments) is over and call after? Or do I call first thing?

I had consistently high white blood cells for a couple of years, it used to get flagged in any routine blood test. Once I was referred for a second, blast, test where they check for cancerous cells. Nothing was found so it was always a mystery to me

healthanxiety11,

how did this work out for you? I recently had high lymphocytes on a blood test. Seeing pcp tmr.

Elsiebear90 · 15/02/2023 17:55

So I used to be a blood scientist, lymphocytes are often high due to a virus, if it was leukaemia they would have seen that on the blood film (they look grossly abnormal) they would have made due to them being high, they would have immediately called the consultant haematologist who would contact you to schedule an urgent appointment for further testing. The fact you’ve been able to get your results and no one has contacted you means they appear normal and it’s likely due to a virus.
