Question for dental workers about root canal antibiotics

After reading a thread about root canal the other day…..saw several posters say they were given antibiotics to clear up infection - is this standard for root canal?

Reason I ask is I’m in a similar situation. I’m a private patient. In May/June I had pain radiating across my top and bottom jaw and into my ear - emergency dentist says I need root canal & does the initial step of killing the nerve & filling with medicine & he put a temporary filling on to cover it. No pain anymore.

Had to wait 3 months to see my own dentist - he cleans the canal out properly & says he wants to refill with medicine to ensure all infection gone.

Since this appointment I have pain on biting on that tooth. After 4 weeks wait went back & he’s cleaned it out again, said it all looks clean inside but as I have pain on biting he said I could still have infection in my bone so put more medicine in & closed it up again. I have to go back after 8 weeks but the earliest appointment I can get is 13 weeks time.

I haven’t been given any tablet antibiotics. Is the medicine they put inside the root canal the antibiotics or should I also have tablet antibiotics if the infection is in my bone?

thanks

Antibiotics are over prescribed and should only be prescribed if there is swelling, fever etc
