His speach is largely good, but he finds it hard to pronounce the S sound at the beginning of words, so he rides a gooter rather than a scooter. I've wondered about his hearing because of this, but I've tried whispering things behind him and he's always heard me, so I assumed hearing was ok.

The note from the nurse says she will ring me to discuss, but I can't help worrying. What are the possible outcomes?

There are a number of things it could be including not being in the mood to comply with the tests! Waxy ears and glue are fairly common causes of deafness, it doesn't necessarily mean he has a permanent problem. I would have thought she will either send you to your gp or refer you to an audiologist for further testing. If you want more information on ears and how they work as well as info about causes of deafness try the national deaf childrens society (NDCS) website, its written for parents rather than medical professionals. If she doesn't ring you today, get her number from the school and call her. I know its easier said than done but do try not to worry!
