Can having a smear cause your period to be heavier than usual?

I had a repeat smear on the 16th and since my period began it has been heavier than usual.

Was just wondering if that may be the cause.

the period i had after my smear was late and awful, much worse than normal and normal is quite bad

I have come on 4/5 days early actually and i don't remember having a period this heavy since pre dd's.
