Argh. ds1 ill. He's *never* ill, so no idea what it is/how to deal with it.

He was fine at bedtime, but had eaten very little all day, sounds snuffly and I did have an odd feeling about him somehow. He just started talking in his sleep, sighing, then woke up and cried. He feels hot all over, temp is 38.6. Had a bf, seemed thirsty. Says he doesn't feel ill and is 'happy' and 'lovely'. He's asleep now. No calpol/similar in house.

When to wake him and check his temp? Do we need to sleep in shifts? He's 2.8.

Sorry, crap questions, but an an utter illness novice - have been very lucky with ds1 so far.

don't wake him, if you are worried sleep in his room. If he gets uncomfy and starts murmuring then you will hear. Then give him a light kiss and you'll soon feel if he is burning up.
Main thing is to make sure that you have some cool water ready to give him so you don't have to go hurtling to the kitchen all worried if he gets thirsty. cool that you are bfing him
Also make sure you are comfy! Nothing like like on a kids floor with not enough duvets/pillows and being scared to get up in case you disturb them!
Hope he feels better soon.

No, imo don't wake him as sleep is what he needs. They can feel quite warm to the touch but unless scalding hot & crying or wet/sticky hot, wouldn't do anything.

If he does get like this, a bath with you or dh normally sorts them out & lowers temp. Wouldn't have the heating on at night. Vicks is good if snuffly.

If really worried about his temp, an all night supermarket will have both calpol and nurofen and you can alternate giving these.

Hope he's ok tomorrow.

thelittleElf · 28/01/2008 21:52

Is there anyone you can send out for calpol, incase it's needed overnight? It might be an idea, incase he spikes a temperature in the early hours.

Just keep him cool, not too many covers, and check on him as many times as you think you need to.

berolina · 28/01/2008 21:54

Thanks. That's reassuring. He's still in his cot next to us (and ds2 in cosleeper on the other side)

All night supermarket in Germany - ha Will look up nearest all night chemist.

He's rolling and turning as he often does. Is certainly no warmer.

He's going to hate me when I tell him he can't go to kindergarten tomorrow.

Will he definitely have to be off?

berolina · 28/01/2008 22:17

If he has a temp surely? Or if he hasn't and ants to go, could I send him? It's only his fourth week, and he loves it so much.

wants to go

I would just see how he is in the morning, since it might just be a 24hr thing and sleep has amazing restorative powers!

You could always mention it too to kindergarton, saying he seems fine now, no temperature, but to call you if he is unwell (so they know to keep an eye on him)

Hope he's better soon.

fishie · 28/01/2008 22:33

i find calpol useless for temperature, neurofen much better. worth having in house although my bf 2.9yo has not had any for about a year.

hunkermunker · 28/01/2008 22:35

Temperature likely to spike about midnight-2am - circadian rhythm does that. He'll get cooler towards morning.

Hope he's better soon - has he got all his teeth yet?

expatinscotland · 28/01/2008 22:38

Aw, berolina!

((HUGS))

Hope he's better soon.

berolina · 29/01/2008 08:08

Morning Thanks for messages after I went to lie anxiously next to him bed.

He was hottish all night, but slept well with bits of tossing and turning. Temp is 37.5 this morning, he is fine in himself. Have sent him to kindergarten after a quick phone call to the staff.

he's got his teeth, hunker. I think he's probably fighting off a cold or little infection. ds2 is a tiny bit snuffly too (no temp, thank goodness).

How are they today, Bero?

expatinscotland · 30/01/2008 10:28

Yeah, how's everyone today, berolina?

Hopefully on the mend.

admylin · 30/01/2008 11:52

Hi berolina, just incase for future use there is a 24 hour Apotheke at the Hauptbahnhof. It is probably far for you but if there was a direct Sbahn it could be worth noting!

Prepare yourself for more though if ds has just started kindergarten he'll be in training for the next few years!
