yes they do not interact
what do you want to take?

southeastastra · 28/01/2008 12:22

nurofen with codeine and ibuprofen, or anadin with ibupofen. both ok then?

don't think penicillin reacts at all with AB's SEA - I've never been told to stop taking mine and I have all sorts!

Wisteria · 28/01/2008 12:24

lol - I meant with PK's

luvaduck · 28/01/2008 12:27

yes no problems to take those
however are you aware nurofen and ibuprofen are the same thing. also check on the label as some anadin types contain ibuprofen. you can only take one of this sort of drug. its different to paracetomol though.
HTH

penicillin is not a painkiller, it is an antibiotic. You are fine to take painkillers alongside it

southeastastra · 28/01/2008 12:37

thanks it's so long since i've had penicillin

OP posts:
southeastastra · 28/01/2008 13:13

sorry to go on, does anyone know how long penicillin takes to work?

OP posts:
Wisteria · 28/01/2008 13:31

I was always advised to take a double dose on the first one and then regular as prescribed and that seems to give it a boost . Penicillin can work almost immediately IME.

Hope you feel better soon x

luvaduck · 28/01/2008 13:36

depends what dose you've been given....if 250mg then fine to double for one dose, but if 500mg tablets then just take one.
however to be on the safe side as we don't know your history - eg if you've got kidney problems etc best to stick to what the doc gave you
sorry it that sounds anal

southeastastra · 28/01/2008 13:43

i've got 3g amoxicillin, it isn't working (tooth abcess) i'm in agony and don't know what to do

OP posts:
Wisteria · 28/01/2008 13:44

How horrid SEA, you have my sympathy. Is 3g a typo or very low dose?

littleboo · 28/01/2008 13:45

When did you start taking them, Is it an abcess that you've got ?
You must take reg pain relief, 400mg ibuprofen, few hours later paracetamol ( or cocodamol - can be prescribed for a higher dose codeine) then back to ibuprofen

southeastastra · 28/01/2008 13:45

it's a powder

OP posts:
littleboo · 28/01/2008 13:46

Sorry - yes obviously an abcess you did say

southeastastra · 28/01/2008 13:49

i took first does at 10.30 but have to wait 8 hours until i can take the other, already taken nurofen, this pain is unbearable thougj

OP posts:
luvaduck · 28/01/2008 14:11

3g is huge dose - is that 3 x a day or in total?
might have as one off and then down to a normal dose
who prescribed this doc or dentist?
if it doesn't work then doc could add in metronidazole or change amoxicllin to augmentin as need to cover for anaerobic bugs (diff type that can grow in tooth abscess)
give it time though itmay work - not very helpful i know
v sore agree you prob need to alternate cocodomol with nurofen

southeastastra · 28/01/2008 14:37

i have to take 2 x 3g packets, he's taking the tooth out tomorrow, rang them they told me to give it time but its so bad i was to cry.

OP posts:
littlepinkpixie · 28/01/2008 14:54

Are you taking regular paracetomol and ibuprofen?
If you are and the pain still isnt getting better then you can contact the dentist for a stronger analgesic.
Toothache is a terrible thing isnt it. Hope you are pain free soon.

luvaduck · 28/01/2008 16:53

ok so its a pre op dose
if you are taking regular ibuprofen and paracetomol then you can get in touch with gp for stronger pain relief. if gp shut try the out of hours docs you shouldn't have to suffer
remember if you get co-codomol it contains paracetomol so you shouldn't take paracetomol as well
good luck

southeastastra · 28/01/2008 17:22

i'm taking nurofen with ibuprofen/codeine and paracetamol.

i think the penicillin is finally starting to work, i really didn't think i'd feel any better, that was the worse four hours of my life. just want the tooth gone now.

OP posts:
southeastastra · 28/01/2008 17:23

oh and thank you!

OP posts:
luvaduck · 28/01/2008 18:51

great thats good news. but as said before ibuprofen and nurofen are the same medicine - one is the trade name and one the real name. so be careful not to have more than 400mg 3 times a day of ibuprofen in either form

southeastastra · 28/01/2008 19:33

yes i suppose i should say nurofen with codeine.

OP posts:
luvaduck · 28/01/2008 19:34

great - just checking!
