What blood test did I have today?

Yes I know I should have asked but I was just chatting away and it only occured to me after that they only took one vial (I was expecting two or three like for a standard panel...)

Background to the blood tests is I have a large ovarian cyst which was apparently forgotten about during COVID. I was having some period issues so was referred for an ultrasound (7 months ago...) To check in on the cyst. I had the ultrasound two weeks ago. Last Wednesday the gynea secretary phoned me and said that the consultant was concerned and wanted to hurry things along, surgery for cyst removal booked for 3 weeks time with a pre-op assesment (so, standard blood panel then I'm guessing) in two weeks.

However she also said I had to have an urgent blood test and gave me a number to call which basically gets you the quickest appointment rather than waiting for one at your GP. I had that test today but it wasn't until after I wondered what they were testing for. Does anyone know what it was likely to be??

They could just be doing a pre op full blood count, liver function and/or kidney function (U&Es).

I used to take blood & know that various tests can be ordered from just one vial - but can't remember if those standard three would just be one vial.

LFT, U&E are yellow top.
FBC is purple so that would need two bottles in total.

CA125 ?

Battlecat98 · 25/10/2022 18:03

Possibly CA125, which is a usual blood test when checking ovarian symptoms.

AGreatUsername · 25/10/2022 18:15

I’d think CA125 too.

ChickyNuggies · 25/10/2022 18:19

Thanks all, that's what I was thinking. Is it reasonably normal to be called for CA125 urgently following an ultrasound or does this mean they've seen something?

I agree, most likely CA125. Can you remember what colour top the bottle had?

ScoobySnacks1 · 25/10/2022 18:23

I would call the consultant’s secretary and ask what the blood test was for, and why.

If it was for something other than CA125 it might stop you worrying

I imagine it will be a ca-125. I had to have a ca-125 blood test after a us scan found some free fluid behind an ovary.
My sister had an us scan a few years ago and a very large cyst was found on an ovary. Her ca-125 blood test was high so she had to have an urgent op to remove it. Turned out to be endometriosis.
