I am now due for a smear and also ttc. If I was just a few days preg would it be safe to have a smear test? I want to have it done asap so that it is out of the way in case I do get pg soon.

i wouldnt risk it personnally. I would speak with the practice nurse and/or the Dr first.
I think that the integrity of the cervix should not be compromised at all if you are in the early stages. Also and just as importantly there is the slim chance of introducing infection with a smear test. I would be extremely reluctant if i were you.

I wouldn't risk it either, plus i 'think'it's best to have a smear just after your period isn't it? (Or have i imagined that??).

Then you could do it at a time when you knew you definately weren't

Alfred, there is no problem getting a smear done in early pregnancy. The only problem is that if they find anything wrong, then it can sometimes be a bit more difficult to sort out during pregnancy. That said, I have known many women who have had colposcopies and alsorts done whilst pregnant with no problems, but I think it would just give you extra worries IYSWIM. If you are at the TTC stage, then part of good pre-conceptual care advice is to go and have a smear done (preferably just before you get pregnant) so that you know everything is ok and os that you don't have to worry for the next few years. As far as your cycle goes, it is best to go mid-cycle, but don't worry too much about that if this may be your only opportunity for a while. HTH

I don't know what official line is but i had a smear test done when i was a couple of weeks pregnant - didn't know at the time.

I was told not to have one by my doctor... i was due for one when i fell pregnant.... she said risk of infection outweighed need for smear... I had it done at my 6 week post natal check instead. Depends though if u have had abnomal smea before I guess.

I was told by my doctor at my 6 week post-pregnancy check to book a smear test, and when I turned up for it the nurse told me that I couldn't have a test until 12 weeks after having a baby because the results would probably show up as irregular because of pregnancy hormones. I would have thought this would be the same at the beginning of the pregnancy?

like kath H I had one earlier this year not knowing I was in very early pregnancy - a week or two and nothing wrong with either the smear or the pregnancy. However saying that I probably would have not had one had I known.

In the US it is routine to do a smear as part of your first pregnancy visit, so certainly people here believe it's OK. Of course, they also do them 6 weeks post-partum, and when mine turned up funny they said oh, it was probably just because of the birth but had to be followed up anyway. The follow up was fine but I still think they just shouldn't have done the post-partum one so early when it was likely to come out that way.

Yes I think it is safe, I had my first ever smear done while I was 7 weeks pregnant, done by the obstetric at Chealsea and Westminster Hospital, I was refered there from my diabetes clinic at Charing X Hospital, back in 1993. And I have since had smears, at all 3 of my post-natal checks.

I was told to wait until after dd was born - had smear booked just a couple of weeks after I found out I was preg

Carameli · 02/12/2004 13:43

Check with your doctor about what they think. I had one done when I was just a few weeks pregnant but then I had not realised I was pregnant then. DD turned out fine so it did not cause any problems for me.
