I'm fairly sure my GP said that I should buy vit d supplements, but my psychiatrist seems to think there's indications for having it prescribed. Who's right?

In my experience the nhs don't prescribe vitamin d anywhere near the strength that the vitamin d council recommend, so I buy high strength from Amazon (4000 iu) as I have MS and there is evidence that it helps. It's not expensive.

Why would you expect it on prescription, it’s relatively cheap to buy, I have MS, my vit d is often very low, quite common with my disability, my MS nurse told me to buy it as GP would only prescribe a short course.

I don't expect it on prescription, I suggested to the psych that I just buy it.

There is a version of vitamin d only available via prescription. Basically It is a different stage of vitamin d, mimicking what a healthy person’s body converts vitamin d into. I cant imagine why a psychiatrist would be recommending it though. It’s for people who have lost their parathyroid glands or who have other disorders related to maintaining calcium in the blood.

My son with Down Syndrome and had very low vitamin D, he was prescribed high dose vit D tablets and once his levels improved I bought 4000iu from Amazon. I think only if it is very low you can get it prescribed.

My daughter was put on a treatment dose as her levels were very low die ti a chronic illness.

She was prescribed 10000iu per day. Once her levels were ok I was told to give her one 10000iu per week. I've run out of the high dose ones now and the doctor just told me to give her over the counter lower dose ones a few times a week. I got some from Amazon which are 4000iu.
