It was very good at controlling periods and period pain

What is it that you are looking for?

I did get PG - but that is blardy rare - I mean really rare - so don't let that put you off

fletchaaarr · 24/01/2008 23:56

Coils are in the main really reliable

fletchaaarr · 24/01/2008 23:59

You could search on merina - there were quite a few threads where people were listing side effects - I never had most of them, but I never had them with other hormonal devices either (ie pill)

There is also the "old" copper coil

I don't know much about that though

Shitemum · 25/01/2008 00:09

thanks, is mirena the one with hormones then? woud prefer not to put any more hormones into my system after 14 yrs on the pill pre-DDs...

Yes - mirena has hormone coating. It was very good for me because of really heavy painful periods. It reduced them and then stopped them

Then I found I was pg 6 months later

I had the "old" copper coil (couldn't have mirena as I was still breastfeeding but not regularly enough to prevent ovulation.)

Was completely unprepared for how painful it was to have inserted. Really nasty in my experience.

Bled for a week, then spotted on and off for about 8 months before periods returned with their normal ferociousness and continued to spot quite a lot in between. Had it removed as also experienced cramping throughout, just dont think my body got on with it.

Having said all that, it was really very convenient as a contraceptive- basically didn't even need to think about it which was great. Real shame it wasn't convenient physically, iyswim.

BUT sis had the copper one too and it completely stopped her periods within about 6 months
