What's going on in my mouth?! Pic

We have just come back from Spain and all have colds as per usual after flying! But DH and I felt our mouths were a little sore. I put it down to being run down and having a couple of big mouth ulcers and assumed the pain was radiating.

I pull my bottom lip down and most of the inside of it is bright red and inflamed. There are bright red patches all in my mouth. Now they have started to come up with tiny blisters or ulcers I can't quite tell. You can't quite see the colour and swelling in the pic but can see the blisters. What is this? The pharmacist didn't seem to know either

Thrush? Hand, foot and mouth? You have my sympathy, it looks sore!

AnotherVice · 13/09/2022 23:35

Herpes caused by sun?

Relevanceiskey · 13/09/2022 23:38

Not thrush as I've had that, hand foot and mouth could be a possibility?!

It’s unlikely if everyone is appropriately vaccinated but they look like Kopliks spots that can be seen in Measles, usually a couple of days after the onset of fever/cough/runny nose, and a couple of days before the onset of the full measles rash.

ZealAndArdour · 13/09/2022 23:40

Any chance of a better photo?

Relevanceiskey · 13/09/2022 23:40

The sun giving you infectious diseases, sounds like a cracking idea for a horror film

Relevanceiskey · 13/09/2022 23:41

We are vaccinated but I guess it's still a possibility right?! I'll try and take a better one

Tested for Covid? It's a common symptom now.

Cantbelieveit12 · 13/09/2022 23:43

Looks like thrush.

Relevanceiskey · 13/09/2022 23:46

I have and its negative. But my MIL didn't test positive for covid until day 5 so they could be false negatives

Relevanceiskey · 13/09/2022 23:46

Hopefully a bit of a better photo

I've had thrush a few times and this feels different/a lot more painful!

How are you today OP?

As a dentist it does look like Measles. There are lots of viruses that can give oral ulceration and becauses it's transient and self limiting they never get classified.

I would assume you are infectious so avoid close contact where possible. Fluids and pain relief if needed.

ZealAndArdour · 14/09/2022 09:56

I think it would be worth calling your surgery today and checking that you’ve all had three MMR’s (dependant on when you were born) and getting on their radar with the symptoms you’ve got. Kopliks spots are highly suggestive of measles if you’ve already had this viral/coryzal prodromal phase.

It might just be “watch and wait” for now to see if a full blown measles rash/conjunctivitis/fever develops, but Measles does require the GP to notify public health England, who would arrange to swab you to confirm and if positive can then decide if there is any further surveillance/control measure that they need to put in place regarding travellers returning from Spain with it. They would ask about where you’d stayed, what trips you went on, etc.

Very important to avoid contact with anyone outside your household. Seek early help via 111 if you feel you need to.

ZealAndArdour · 14/09/2022 09:58

Sorry *two doses of MMR.

I’ve had three because my first dose was erroneously documented as being given two years before I was born.

Relevanceiskey · 14/09/2022 10:05

Oh no I have a 10 week old who obviously hasn't had mmr 😢 hopefully she's OK! My 2 yo has had an awful cold turned sick bug over the last 2 days I wonder if that's related?

Mouth worse today and slight cold symptoms still. Haven't got any other rash though!

OK I phoned GP and they told me I had my measles jabs so im fine (although I'm not sure she should be giving out that kind of advice). I brought up how I had a blood test when I was pregnant in new zealand and they told me my rubella antibody count was low and needed to be revaccinated so maybe something wasn't quite right with my MMR

Anyway she told me to phone back tomorrow so hopefully it's not that serious!
