When to consult doctor about cough?

DH has now had a cough for 5 weeks. Hasn't had any cold/fever/other signs of illness although he did a lateral flow in the first week which was negative.

It's worse in the morning and definitely sounds chesty rather than a post nasal drip type of cough, and he has no pain or breathlessness. Has taken antihistamines in case it's a new allergy it they didn't make any difference.

It's such a pain getting to see the doctor these days but I keep seeing the ads on tv about seeing one if you've had a cough for three weeks! Wwyd? Give it a couple more weeks?

I thought it was after 2 or 3 weeks your meant to call with a cough. I’ve had no trouble recently getting to see my dr which has been very surprising. Give them a call if they don’t think it’s anything to be concerned over they will tell you

Please ask your DH see his GP OP, just for a check-up.

It’s been more than 4 weeks, he needs to see his GP.

Yes - I think see GP about it.

I recently saw my doctor as had a cough for about 8 weeks with no other symptoms but my daughter did wake me up a few times over the weeks saying she heard me wheezing..I have mild asthma from years that's never bothered me
Saw the doctor three times, the first twenty times I was put on antibiotics although my chest she said was clear she wanted to try antibiotics both times they did nothing and I continued to cough
She also said she couldn't hear any wheezing in my chest, she then put me on omeprazole for 14 days and I continued to cough so eventually she sent me for a chest X-ray last week which came back clear
I'm now on the brown preventative inhaler morning and night and at last the coughing has eased even though she never heard any wheezing it must be my asthma that's decided to bother me
My daughter has still heard me wheezing during sleep but the cough has eased to nearly gone since using the brown inhaler
Could be asthma with your dh tell him get seen

kissmelittleass · 31/08/2022 23:52

Auto correct ffs the first two times' not twenty times!!!!

icantworkout · 01/09/2022 07:38

@kissmelittleass he doesn't seem to be wheezing in between coughing, and I'm asthmatic myself so I know what it sounds like. His is more of a productive cough. It may be worth giving him a puff on my preventative inhaler before bed though, just to check if it makes any difference!

GP are working, you may get a phone call first, but they should see him and will probably arrange a chest xray. 5 weeks for an ongoing cough needs looking into.
