Clotting/period-like pain whilst on pill?

Hi,

I was hoping someone might be able to give me a rough idea of how to further investigate this issue, as my GP was rather unhelpful last time I discussed it!

In Feb, I had my worst period ever during a pill break (v heavy, so painful I couldn't concentrate at work etc). I went to the GP after this as I haven't had a period that heavy in years, since I began taking the combined pill.
I got an ultrasound of my womb and all ok apparently. GP said I should stop taking the pill back to back, but I ignored this as I've heard from specialists it's actually more effective if you do so and you don't HAVE to have a period (unless you want to avoid breakthrough bleeding).

For the last two weeks, I've had breakthrough bleeding, massive blood clots and period-like cramps. I am not on a pill break, and am only on my second packet in a row (i usually have 2-3 in a row before taking a 5 day break - I've done this successfully for 5 years!).

Any idea why this is happening? It's painful, and i'd like to make it stop if possible!

Thanks :-)

I know it seems bad to ignore the GP's advice but he seemed quite sexist/shaming me for being on the pill in the first place so I trusted my nurse's advice instead!
If you reckon he was right please let me know 😅

I had this for 3 weeks last year, scans showed nothing except a tiny fibroid which the gynaecologist said was too small to cause it. I was told to take the pill back to back and prescribed memfemic acid and traxemic acid to stop the bleeding and pain (I ended up being aneamic) However my periods every 3 months are incredibly painful and I can't find a reason for it, the doctor doesn't seem bothered, has written it off as Mt age, I'm early 40s

@Blinky21 thank you for sharing, that is very interesting - one thing my doctor said to me was that as i was already on the pill/taking mefenamic acid, that would be the treatment for any potential issues anyway so there wasn't much he could do.

I think i will continue taking the pills back to back - i really don't see what the harm is in doing so, most doctors seem to recommend it these days (or at least, shorter breaks between the packs i.e. 3-5 days not 7). I'll just have to watch and wait re. the pain/bleeding I guess! 🤞
