Thyroid removal

Due to large nodules (biopsied and non-cancerous but fast growing) I need my thyroid removed. I don't particularly want it done but it's better for me to get it taken out due to the size and rapid growth of the nodules.

I'm 42, a bit overweight (if I could lose 8kg I'd be happy) and fittish.

Please run me through your experiences and confirm my worst fear that I will never be able to lose weight after this (not helped by peri menopause).

Thank you

Hi, no direct experience but my granny had hers removed in her 30s. The only issue I am aware of is that she didn’t find it comfortable to wear high necked tops after the op. She was always fit and healthy and not overweight until her last few years when her mobility decreased (she was in her late 80s by then).

Hope you get some more direct reports!

I had mine removed 10 years ago, similar reasons but my growth had pushed my windpipe out of place and was making it more difficult to breath. I've been on levo ever since and am generally pretty stable on it.

Its not easy to lose weight but it is possible. (I lost a about 10kg last year, more to go though!) I also don't like high neck tops. However my scar is almost invisible and I have to point it out when talking about it.

I was off work for 3 months but I think that's unusual - my growth was about 12cm at its widest and had gone under my collar bone so the op was a bit more extensive than most.

If you've got any questions I'd be happy to try and answer them!
