Confused with blood test results - thyroid

I have been having almost every symptom of hypothyroidism, also my mum and nan have both had it as I know it can be genetic.

Just looked on the doctors app and have seen my blood results from yesterday are on there and say 'normal'.

The GP sent me for a routine blood test, do routine blood tests even test for hypothyroidism or would it be easily picked up in any blood test?

It depends on what blood test was requested, your thyroid level would be listed on the results if it was tested.

@BlanketsBanned I don't think it is?

No its not on there, your doctor needs to request a thyroid function test

That’s just a full blood count. You need tsh (thyroid stimulating hormone) and t4 (the hormone in your blood) doing. The tsh should be around 1 ideally but the nhs won’t treat until it’s 10 and when on treatment are happy for it to be up to 5. The t4 needs to be in the top half of the normal range but again they’ll ignore it if it’s anywhere in the normal range.

If you suspect thyroid issues you need a TSH test (thyroid stimulating hormone) and to really do it properly also the thyroid antibody test which looks for Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) and Thyroglobulin Antibody.

You can get the tests privately with Medichecks (amongst others) if your GP is not cooperative

Ah how frustrating, it took me 3 weeks to even get this appointment 😖 thanks for letting me know though! Have rung the doctors but of course nobody will speak to me now so will have to ring Monday

Gosh are they a bit thick, they haven't given you the correct blood test!

Musicaltheatremum · 02/08/2022 22:29

Hang on, how many tubes of blood did they take? The FBC is in one and the thyroid tests are in another tube. Maybe all the results aren't back yet. Sometimes one comes back a day or so after the other.

Gloschick · 02/08/2022 22:36

Give it time. Thyroid blood results take a bit longer to come back.

Hello! I know this is an old thread now but did you @cakelady2320 ever get your results did they come later or did they not test for them? As I’m in exactly the same position as you I have every symptom and my results just came back as the FBC ones 😩
