Alendroic Acid experiences

I've had a cancerous lump removed from my breast, plus radiotherapy. I've got to take Letrozole for 5 years.
Now I've heard I also have to take Alendroic acid because my bones are thinish and Letrozole might thin them even more.
Also will have to take calcium and vit d.
How thin do bones have to be before taking bone strengthening tablets?

Make sure you have a dental check up and have any teeth that are at all dodgy out before you start taking it.

Middleagedfrog · 22/07/2022 15:48

Had a check up about a month ago and have told them I'm about to start taking it.
Surely if it improves bone density, that's a good thing for teeth?

What's 'at all dodgy' mean?

If you need an extraction once taking bisphosphonates you are at risk of osteonecrosis. Not nice.

At all dodgy- poor or questionable prognosis. Broken down, poor root fillings, mobile, that sort of thing.

My MIL has just stopped taking it after 5 years. She was nervous about the side effects, but was absolutely fine, and it did make a bit difference to her bones.

Middleagedfrog · 22/07/2022 15:56

@NancyJoan thank you for the reassurance.
@Bickles I do have plenty of fillings and I've told the dentist I'm about to take it. Not sure what else to do. Would it be better to not take it?

Your dentist can advise if you have any poor prognosis teeth.

I’ve been taking it for a few years (along with a calcium supplement) after being on steroids for arthritis affected my bone density. Had a bone density scan last year and it has improved since I’ve been on it, which I was really pleased about. It’s been fine with no side effects.

Middleagedfrog · 22/07/2022 18:31

@EllieQ Thank you, good to know.

I thought they'd measure my bone density now and measure a few months down the line and then see if the letrozole was having an effect on my bone density.

I had to take alendronic acid for similar reasons to you. It’s fine. However, in my local area, currently out of stock everywhere.

Middleagedfrog · 22/07/2022 19:08

@Riverlee Thank you, again good to know. Not so good to hear it's out of stock though.
