Ouch my back!

Never really had back problems but last week pulled a lower back muscle while emptying the washing machine. It’s so sore. Feels bruised. Knock on effect is my whole back is sore and crampy. Probably because I’m guarding the injury and maybe bing stiffly,

im taking nurofen. I’m quite active and go to gym. Did a Pilates class tonight and felt better for it. Do I continue to exercise? Or rest? When will it get better?

Sympathy. If Pilates helped then yes, continue to move but nothing heavy or over strenuous. Regular paracetamol and or ibuprofen will help you to keep moving if you are very sore.

it really should improve in a few days but may take a while to completely resolve.

Obviously consult you GP if symptoms worsen or any bladder or bowel issues arise.

Thanks. Will avoid weights and stick to Pilates for a bit. I think sitting at a desk all day has stiffened my back up. I really need a proper chair.

Radiographer here - bonea oa my expertease but know a little of muscles and soft tissue.
Firstly keep active - keep it gentle though. The worst thing to do is just sit and "rest" not moving will cause your back to seize up. Pilates seems a little extreme. Maybe some gentle yoga / walking is good / and you can try rotating between hot and cold compresses. Very gentle superficial massage to encourage the muscles to relax. If the muscle has gone into spasm then it will affect your whole back/legs etc.
Gentle exercise - keep moving
Pain relief
Warm / hot compress
Gentle massage (extra pair of hands)
Relax (super important)

After you've healed up can take upto 6 weeks, so don't go nuts after a week, focus on core muscle exercises to build up the strength again.

Thank you. Yes my whole back is so stiff, especially after not moving for a bit. I had a nice bath tonight that helped. Just walking about has helped today. Will take it slowly and take pain relief.

so annoying. and painful.

Definitely keep moving, take painkillers and try and get on with things as normally as you can, without pushing too much. My spinal consultant recommends yoga, pilates, swimming and lots of walking
