What is this perfect straight line on my nail?
Sorry I wasn’t sure where to post this, I know it’s not health related but I thought to post here as it’s body related.

Google ‘line on nail’. There’s lots of causes but rarely it can be a sign of something serious.

I have this. No idea what it is.

My baby ds has this on his toenail. Well, had. It grew out and came back again after a few cuts. I kept thinking a hair was under the nail

MrsEricBana · 07/07/2022 02:22

So it can be caused by a hard knock to the nail and is essentially a bruise under the nail that fades or grows out. Not to panic you but it could also be something called subungual (= under the nail) melanoma, which would need treating. The ones I've seen are normally a darker, straighter line. These do not grow out. In your place I'd look at images of subungual melanoma and if yours looks in any way similar I'd contact the GP tomorrow and send a photo. Hopefully not that but please don't ignore it.

BobaTea · 19/07/2022 20:24

@notpineapple , did you get it checked? I've a fainter line on my toenail.

notpineapple · 28/07/2022 12:37

For those of you who have said you’ve got the same, send some photos to your doctors and see what they say. It’s probably fine but best to be on the safe side.

I sent some photos in better lighting the doctor who has referred me to a dermatologist to check it out.

I think mine is the nail rather than under the nail as when if I don’t cut the toenail and it grows slightly longer/past the skin then the line is still there on the entire length of the nail.

I've had a faint line on my nail, first noticed it about 11 years ago. Asked GP (not sure she knew what was going on), told me she would, if I was still concerned, send nail clipping off for testing. It was whilst I was pregnant and soon after that I had a prem baby so all was forgotten. I then mentioned it to another GP about 4 years later, who said she wasn't concerned and if it was something sinister I'd know by now Confused

I seem to have very faint lines appear on at least 2 other nails too, so I believe it must be a zinc or some b vitamin deficiency (in my case, but I'm self diagnosing here Blush)

@notpineapple ,please let us know what the dermatologist say. I'll get mine checked.

BobaTea · 16/08/2022 17:10

@notpineapple , hope you don't mind me asking, did you get checked out with the dermatologist? I'm now being referred.

My partner had a referral to a dermatologist because he had a wart under his fingernail. It turned out to be a very slow growing form of skin cancer. During the consultation the dermatologist checked other finger and toe nails and mentioned that although there were several possible causes, a vertical line down a nail on either hand or foot can occasionally be a sign of melanoma - a more serious form of skin cancer. Can I ask whether you got it checked out and what it turned out to be.

I've got an appointment to see the GP today. I will let you know the outcome. I'm worried it might be cancer related. I hope your husband is okay.

He’s fine. They amputated the top part of his finger - he’s diabetic and they said this was the safest option as other treatment attracted a higher infection risk, which isn’t great for diabetics. He’s been given the all clear now. I do hope everything works out fine for you - please do let me know how you get on. Fingers crossed for you.
