How likely is a cough to be caused by reflux?

I've had it quite a few months it was a little tickle/dry throat clearing cough but its grown to a catarrah/dry throat almost gagging large cough over the last 4 weeks or so

The gp suggested omeprazole during our phone call this morning for 4 weeks to see if it gets better

I didnt even know reflux could cause a cough!

I get a cough with reflux, and also post nasal drip.

Do you have reflux? Seems a bit of an add assumption to jump to as first diagnosis

KatyMac · 01/07/2022 13:34

Not that I've noticed - would I notice it?

I rarely get indigestion at all, occasionally 3/4 times a year maybe? More when I was pregnant but dd is 24 now!

Some times if you like me have mild symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

If I eat spicy or fatty food after say 6pm, I can get acid reflux in my sleep. Some times it can wake you up and its horrible, But it always gives me a chesty cough.

I have severe reflux and a chronic cough. I don't get any symptoms of heart burn like you would expect but I get a dry cough and often bring up clear mucous.
It's caused by the acid coming out of my stomach and irritating my throat. Im on omeprazole and it does help reduce the cough.

She sad to give it 4 weeks and see - so I will

It's good to know reflux can be symptomless as I wouldn't have imagined that

Thanks

Interestingly, (I have been googling!) Reflux can be made worse by ibuprofen and about a month/6 weeks ago I started using ibuprofen gel on a knee injury....coincidence? Probably but I haven't taken ibuprofen for years as it upset tummy back in my 20s

I'm 34 weeks pregnant with bad acid reflux and taking omeprazole. The reflux is definitely giving me a bad cough at night that makes me a bit hoarse sometimes during the day

BiteyShark · 02/07/2022 06:30

Yes I cough after meals and medication for reflux generally stops this unless I have a really fatty large meal (only on a low dosage).

It’s definitely worth a try. I have a hiatus hernia and reflux that had ulcerated my oesophagus. It was found when I had an endoscopy for something else. I hadn’t had enough symptoms to register concern with the GP but my oesophagus was very ulcerated. Apparently 1 in 3 people have a hiatus hernia by the time they’re 50, which is likely to have some level of accompanying reflux . So, assuming they’re listened to your lungs using a stethoscope (and maybe checked your temp, blood pressure, 02 levels etc) it would be in the next level of things to rule out for a chronic cough as you’ve described, I would have thought (just my opinion, I’ve got a job in a scientific field and have studied physiology but I’m not a medic). Hope you get it sorted.

Thanks guys I feel a bit better about it

My only slight Hiccup is related to "So, assuming they’re listened to your lungs using a stethoscope (and maybe checked your temp, blood pressure, 02 levels etc)" nope phone call 😆🙄

Interestingly some antidepressants can also cause reflux but not the one I'm on

I just worry about stacking medication on top of medication

I have mild GERD causing a cough at night, affecting my sleep. I'm on lansoprazole and the difference is very noticeable

HangingOver · 02/07/2022 08:50

I have a gross sounding cough after everything I eat because I'm a pig and eat too fast

& could omeprazole cause a very bad stomach?

No omeprazole is used to treat a bad stomach. It works by reducing the amount of acid that the stomach produces. It can cause constipation.
I've been on max dose of it for 3 years and it has helped.
Sometimes it's trial and error to find the medication that works the best.

So my god awful attack of ibs was a coincidence?

Oh well onwards and upwards - my current cough is definitely a virus (DD got it too) but the underlying cough needs addressing still

My cough is still rotten!
