Splinter getting infected? Can I sort it myself?

Got a tiny splinter or thorn and stupidly didn’t remove it straight away. Finger has got increasingly sore and swollen and warm to the touch. Small circle around the tiny splinter that is raised and slightly yellow.
shall I message dr? Go to pharmacy? Do something myself like try to dig it out? Or will it sort itself out.
(complication is this is my left hand and I play a string instrument and am booked for a gig on Saturday so really don’t want to cut into the finger but do need to make it so I can use it)

Try soaking it in hot water with salt in it, it's great for drawing out splinters. You could try soaking, gently popping the yellow head with a sterile needle, give it another soak and then seeing if you can remove it with tweezers.

I would poke it with a sterile needle, let the pus out, then clean with antiseptic and put a plaster on to keep it clean.

I had this last December. I ended up going to the walk in at the cottage hospital. The nurse pierced it and covered it and I was on a course of antibiotics
It was much easier to do that than suffer as I could see the infection spreading to my knuckle.

Soak in warm water with a drop of Dettol to soften the skin and then apply pressure from either side. If you're feeling brave, pierce with a sterile needle to remove the pus. Repeat every day until it comes out.

I can't imagine going to a doctor for a splinter. I usually do the above and then just suck my finger until it comes out.

Thank you I will try the above
just realised how swollen it looks compared to other finger!

Poke needle in it to make split in skin then soak in dilute hydrogen peroxide. After that pull the splinter out, soak again and should be fine x

I had to. My finger had swollen so much and it was badly infected.
I tried to cure it myself using the methods suggested and eventually went to the pharmacy who told me it was really bad and go to the walk in. It must have been bad to need antibiotics.
🤷‍♀️

I’m such an idiot, I Need to be able to press down on it for my gig on Saturday. Hopefully if I can get it out today it will be alright

How did you take this photo? Was your nose involved? 😁

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 30/06/2022 18:39

You do know that you should have put the photo up in Sporner Corner?

You’ll get lots of frankly dangerous good advice from the posters over there.

SantaMonicaPier · 30/06/2022 18:46

I've had similar before and managed to dig it out with really sharp tweezers and found that applying an antiseptic cream (it was Germolene or similar) then covering with a plaster, repeated for a few days took down the swelling.

Bananaman123 · 30/06/2022 18:52

Needle to get it out, buy some Zambuck and keep it smothered in it

Magnesium sulphate paste from the chemist. It'll draw the splinter and pus out.

Soak in hot salt water ,that should burst almost immediately, put some Savlon on it should heal ok but if it doesn't get better then see a GP or nurse. TCP is great too although stinky.

boopdeflouff · 30/06/2022 21:46

I would just take a needle to that, poke it and squeeze.

The relief will be almost immediate.

User0610134049 · 30/06/2022 23:10

Update - thank you I followed advice and used sharp angled tweezers that came with a tic removal kit to pop it and then get the splinter out, sore but feels better and less swollen.
Totally should’ve posted in sporners corner as was surprised by the yellow stuff that came out!

savlon on with plaster over now so hopefully will be all better by the weekend

I’m sorry I didn’t take a pic of the extraction or pus coming out, I was concentrating on that 😆
