My digestive system just won't stop gurgling

I am 49 and have had IBS for 24 years but the last 5 years my symptoms have been almost daily.
I have had endless tests over the last few years (colonoscopy, gastroscope, CT scan, ultra sound scans, stool samples and a capsule endoscopy), all ok.
I follow the low fodmap diet, no dairy, no sweeteners, drink only water, I dont chew gum. I take peppermint capsules, drink the tea etc but nothing will stop this incessant gurgling.
My stomach gurgles, my intestines gurgle, my bowels gurgle. It even wakes me in the night and is driving my absolutely insane.
The doctors don't want to know and one GP even said guts are supposed to gurgle and she'd be more concerned if it was quite but she could not grasp the concept that my digestive system is angry and gurgly ALL the bloody time. That can not be normal!
Does anyone else have this?
Any suggestions to calm my gurgly guts?

When I was first diagnosed, they fobbed me off with 'everyone's tummy gurgles, your too self conscious'. I pointed out you can hear mine across a room! I'm not self conscious!

Have you paid attention to what triggers it? Vegetables? Grains? Fruit?

Maybe if you work that out, you'd be able to add other things back in again.

picklemewalnuts I am very careful with fibre and only stick to small portions of low fodmap veg and hardly any fruit. My symptoms seem to be getting worse now in my late 40's, I often wonder if perimenopause is contributing?

In which case HRT could be the thing?

Foods (and guts) are funny things. I had an uncle that could eat anything except the skin on a cucumber.

My eldest burps after chilli. Nothing else, just chilli. Paprika is fine, capsicum, fine. But not chilli.

I hope you get some resolution. It's no fun.

Mine is settled, after years of problems. Caffeine was making it worse.
However without it, I grind to a halt, digestion wise. I need a daily strong fresh coffee to perform!

Do you eat / drink soy products? They make me gurgle like mad. I still eat tofu because I love it but I steer clear of everything else these days!

RedorangeyellowBLACK · 29/06/2022 17:06

Noonado I don’t consume any soy products.

following gastric surgery my tummy makes the most horrendous of gurgling noises. It’s also swollen due to the gas inside it. I can literally turn heads with the noises it makes and I won’t even start on my boom booms except to say I’ve scared myself awake many a time in the middle of the night such is the noise.

A few weeks ago I reduced carbs to about 100gms per day and adopted a much higher protein intake way of eating. The results have been absolutely staggering and peace now reigns supreme in my tummy.

I have similar OP and have found taking Menopace supplements help. I am similar age, no idea if peri-menopause yet but take them anyway. Def seem to help with tummy issues.

Jenjenn · 29/06/2022 17:21

Yes to menopace (I'm 39). Tummy has calmed down and my moods are much improved.

Irridescantshimmmer · 29/06/2022 17:25

Mine is very loud, I can't get away from myself.

I don't have IBS thank goodness.

@picklemewalnuts hi what exactly were you diagnosed with ? Was it ibs or something else causing the constant stomach noises ?

LapinR0se · 03/06/2024 16:09

For me, the more conscious I am of the noises, the louder it becomes. The less I think about it, the less it gurgles.

It was IBS.

watermelonsugarmum · 07/06/2024 12:30

@picklemewalnuts last question did you do a endoscopy? Or it was just diagnosed as ibs .

SeatonCarew · 07/06/2024 12:33

I presume you've been tested for Coeliac Disease OP?

Otherwise, as a side issue, I find mashed potato can be very helpful if my gurgly tummy is feeling fractious.

PanicAttax · 07/06/2024 12:39

Are you getting quite suddenly hungry? I've recently been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and get the same thing -intense sudden hunger and loud gurgling. Maybe ask to have bloods for thyroid?

No investigations, just diagnosed as IBS.

That said, I’ve had various diagnoses since then that fit with having over reactive everything- hyper sensitivity etc.

borborygmi!

Me too, it’s horrible-I absolutely dread quiet meetings.
