Cuticle that never fully heals - what is this? (Pics)

I’ve had this ongoing problem with a cuticle (I think?)… like a hangnail but never really clears up fully. I showed it to a doctor (in middle of other things) and she just shrugged and said it looked like something (can’t rem) and gave the impression that nothing she could give me. I don’t go to doctor often so haven’t had opportunity to ask again yet.

So as you can see in the pics, there’s a sort of split, with whitish bumps under the nearby skin but also below the affected area. At best, the split heals up, but the bumpy bits still remain. I try to keep it dry, use rubber gloves, because it gets worse if wet for prolonged periods. Because of the split and the bumps it is raised, and catches off things. But covering it makes it damp and worse. There’s no pus or obvious infection. But sore when pressed/catches on something)

So any ideas as to what it might be called or what might get rid of it? It’s being going on for a few years, not always split but never normal. (Excuse non-manicured nails, need to keep them short, rarely wear nail polish etc). Thanks!

Hi @CailleachBan I have something similar and was wondering if you managed to find anything to treat it? Thanks.

Wart treatment

Moonicorn · 23/02/2023 22:02

Wart i reckon

ItsDefinitelyChocolate · 23/02/2023 22:07

Yup I'm calling wart. I had something similar on my thumb. Asked the pharmacist, they said probably wart, best bet is to go and see a nurse at gp practice. Saw nurse, frozen off, job done.

Could be a whitlow

Throwncrumbs · 23/02/2023 23:27

Looks fungal to me

I used to get these very frequently, until I was diagnosed with allergic contact dermatitis. Now that I avoid my allergens I rarely get them.

You could try hydrocortisone ointment. That's what I use when I get a dermatitis flare, but it is only effective on these particular wounds if I apply it as soon as they begin. Once they get to the inflamed stage, or are big, then it's not very effective. Oddly enough, hand sanitiser helps. But only the foam-style ones, not the gels. I suspect they kill any infection, which helps the skin to heal. Also plenty of moisturising with bland moisturiser.

Are you washing your hands a lot?

I still have it. Your post resurrected this thread, thanks! It’s not a wart. I’ll try hydrocortisone, I’m pretty sure I tried an anti-fungal before. It’s just always there. I am not an excessive hand washer, and use rubber gloves if washing up. Thanks everyone for replying.
