Blocked ears

I had a cold a few weeks ago with sinus pain and had blocked ears for about a week and I could barely hear. It disappeared but I went swimming last weekend and since then I’m deaf again. It doesn’t feel like there’s water in there. I can’t see a doctor as I’m away… any suggestions of the best way to treat it? Thank you!

It's probably water trapped behind some wax, so treat the wax and it should clear up. 2 weeks of daily olive oil drops should do it. Failing that, book privately for micro suction and it'll be sorted in 10 mins.

Thank you. I will try the drops, the idea of suctioning freaks me out a little

This was amazing. But my ear was very blocked with wax.

We’ve just had success on my son with Otex, where olive oil had done nothing.

Chemist gave me some oil drops which I’ll try for a couple of days, no change so far. Then I’ll upgrade to the stronger stuff! Thanks all

I just had similar after a virus. I saw a nurse who told me my ears were full of wax. Ok but I've never had waxy ears. I tried the drops she suggested. My ears got worse. I saw my GP who said there was no wax at all but the drum was bulging suggesting there was fluid stuck behind it - a kind of glue ear. She suggested taking decongestants to see if it drained. It did eventually. No idea what the nurse was looking at...

Try Olbas oil in boiling water - place in your room an hour before bed and then add more boiling water - 3 nights should help

Flyingbymypants · 25/06/2022 09:29

If you've had a cold/sinus issue the fluid is probably in your middle ear rather than your external ear canal.

I would recommend using the oil then I bought an ear syringe from Amazon which I have used myself and it was quite therapeutic watching the gunk come out! I also now have an led lit camera thing I use to keep an eye on it all in there. I am trying to avoid vertigo again!

LeeMiller · 26/06/2022 02:31

Can I do anything about it i it’s in my middle ear @Flyingbymypants ?

thanks @eurochick maybe I’ll try decongestants too

drops haven’t done anything so far

You need to decongest as an earlier poster said. Your eustachian tubes are probably all inflamed because of the cold. You could try decongestant spray, sudafed or steam/olbas oil.

LeeMiller · 28/06/2022 10:42

I can hear perfectly for about 5 minutes after I do the drops, then I’m deaf again. Does that mean it’s wax and they’re working? How long does it take? I have some urgent phone calls to make and it’s impossible like this.

I will get some decongestant today in case that helps.

Honestly try and ear syringe. You just fill it with warm water and then put it into your ear while your head is turned to the side. The water will run out and so will any hunk that is there. It's the only thing that cleared my ear when I had vertigo.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 28/06/2022 20:16

This is like the one I got.

I’ve just ordered similar so that’s what I’ll be doing tomorrow night! Thanks
