Dental Issue

Hi, this issue might seem really pathetic to some but my mental health isn't great anyway so this seems to be taking over my life right now.
I am dental phobic and have a severely bad gag reflex. This is after a number of bad experiences over the years. I can even have a mirror put in my mouth without gagging.
i currently have a need for a couple of fillings and am in quite a bit of pain.
A few days ago, i went to dentist and got IV sedation. I don't remember anything but apparently I was fine getting injection and a couple more xrays but when they went to start the treatment, they said I would not open my mouth for anything. I dont understand what happened but im still here in pain and at a complete loss of what to do.
Has anyone ever had a similar experience under sedation or any have any advice on what to do to get IV to work because I dont know where to go from here.

You must have opened your mouth for the dentist to get the injection in.
What has the dentist said? Did they think you were over-sedated and were loathe to use a mouth prop to get on with the fillings?
What is the dentist's plan going forward? Try again with a different dose or referral to a dental hospital ?
