How many days of antibiotics for bacterial tonsillitis?

I've been given 3.5 days worth of penecillin - does that sound about right?

I always used to be given seven days and told to take the whole course (had tonsillitis a lot until I had them out!). 3.5 days doesnt sound like much to me.

DD had 7 days worth of amoxycillin, before xmas for this

Not sure for adults but both my dds have had bacterial tonsillitis and bacterial pharyngitis in the last year and both of them had to have abs for 10 days. Prescription was in 2 halves as it only keeps for 7 days in fridge. Hope this is helpful - 3.5 days doesn't sound long enough to me - the pharmacist might be able to help?

you should have 7 days of penicillin 500mg. Tonsillitis is very stubborn and unless blasted with antibiotics it lingers. You need to get to the point where your pee stinks of antibiotics.

oh drat. this is the 2nd time i've had it since christmas (first time was viral) and i'm 14 weeks pregnant and have been feeling like poo for one thing or another for weeks.

The tablets are 250mg each and to take 8 a day, so that's 2000mg a day.

Ds1 had tonsilitis over Christmas and had to have four doses of penicillin a day for 7 days. 3.5 days is about when he was just starting to get better so doesn't sound like enough to me.

If you are old enough gargle with a hydrogen peroxide solution - it will oxidise the bacteria and you will be tonsillitus free - I am allergic to anti biotics and was the only thing that worked - tasted like shit but you were better by the next day!

Thanks everyone. I had to go back to the hospital with DD today and the registrar kindly gave me another 4 days worth of penecillin, so I am MUCH relieved. Thank goodness I asked you all and you all replied!!!
